This place FLLR Finger lake live rock is an incredible business. I just got my order in the other day and aside from an Emperor angel that came in from their wholesaler a little on the small side that didnt make it, everything else was amazing quality and best price ive seen. They have weekly specials, I got 2 med size cleaner shrimps for 17.98, a six inch square back anthias with great color for $25 and others, Obviously they say the size varies but I am very happy. You do have to pay tax since they are in NY but well worth it. They only take orders over the phone for now though but I like the personal experience better anyway. If you call them you will probably end up talking with a young guy by the name of josh who bent over backwards and went far beyond normal customer service to help me with my order. You have to play a bit of phone tag to make sure they have items in stock though. Good thing is that josh would actually go into the stock room or whatever and physically make sure they had healthy specimen and gave me an idea on the sizes they had. I will be ordering again this week if anyone wants to go in with me. The price list is constantly changing so consider it a guidline some things I ordered ended up being cheaper and some things were unavailable in the size i wanted and had to pay a bit more for a different size.

This is last weeks price list :

I think he said the new one will be up later tonight but the same link

how the heck do orders taken over the phone equal personal experience? :lmao:

how much was the small dead emperor? (no need to reply publicly.)

You dont think talking to someone is more personal that making an online order through the web Gary? Well the same guy I talked to on the phone several times (josh) made the delivery himself and even stayed a while to talk about some other items they carry such as the the 40 pounds of black Tahitian sand from carribsea which i just ordered for far less than other prices I saw online. IMO Even If he didnt make the delivery it still would have been more personal than (click, click, insert billing info, click and wait..... and hope....) The angel was about 3 inches which i think was their medium Juv. and was on special the week before this past special. I ordered on Monday but since I was only a day late he gave me the past special price anyway which was 34.99

I'm sorry. Randy at ARC is world class. I'm not kidding. In Cheektowaga, NY that's who you should be dealing with. Time will prove me right.

+1. Nothing beats knowing that everything you buy was inspected, treated and well taken care of. Support your local LFS! :)

Wow! I deal with randy and the guys ( including you jon ) all the time and have absolutely no complaints, IMO ARC is the best LFS that Ive been too and im sure its the same for others. That doesnt mean I cant try other places or people. I dont know anyone in the hobby that hasnt made a purchase from another hobbyist or online. Im confused... Not really sure why Im being attacked here for buying and having a good experience with a local company other than my LFS? Do you have an experience with FLLR you would like to share or is it purely speculation Gary? Im just trying to share my recent experience with others so that they know. Isnt that what this site is about? sharing experiences and first hand knowledge? Not sure how or why you feel time will effect the great experience I just had with them or even if that is possible. But who knows? Perhaps tonight's game has spirits a bit low? All I know is i would not think to speak poorly about a companies product unless I had first hand knowledge. Nor would I tell someone that the way they felt about an experience is wrong. That is beyond me. Every store or companies creditability has to come from somewhere so I just wanted to give them a +1 thats all.

I really like going into a local business that I can trust. Trust to be pest free and healthy. To be to know that they aren't just selling something and really care if it survives or not. A place that checks what fish you have before they sell you another so there aren't any fights to the end. A place that wont sell you hard to keep corals in a newly cycled tank. I'll pay a little extra any day to buy it once. Not saying anything bad about this place. I dont know them.

I must say, the site is interesting at best. After looking at the list of livestock it becomes obvious they are willing to order what every you want. There is no way all those species are available all the time. The .pdf list smacks of a wholesale listing from an importer. IMHO, the absolutely worst way to buy fish. There is no way they can guarantee quality if its a come get it when I come back from the airport. Does anyone recognized the list?

As for buying rock, going to an LFS can work nicely in that you can hand pick the pieces. Albeit more expensive, a much better choice. I agree with the others on the LFS support. They are the people that will most likely have answers for your problems when they inevitably arise.

People need to cheer up around here . If somone had a good experience with anything or anyone i think its there right to share. Same if they had a bad one people should know. I see tons of people ordering from oneline store like dr smiths and foster , saltwater fish.com and others there not local why do you go there?

I think its total bs he gets attacked for sharing an experience. I personnally have not dealt with this company but i think they are local .

nobody is attacking anybody

nobody is attacking anybody

I'm not a Jets fan and this isn't the first time we've seen this type of business in our area. There's no doubt that ARC's relationship with the wholesaler is stronger than Josh's.

I'm simply not a fan of virtual stockrooms.

As for this comment i think it was just about one of the worst i have seen. Every local store i see around here gets there fish in from airport and go right up for sale. I was in one last week as an employee came back from the airport picking up fish probablt from same supplier . Guess where the fish went right into the tanks then prices where writing on glass .

You think local stores bring there fish in from there home tanks?NO!!! they get them off the airplane then put in tanks to sell . They dont qt big deal they might run a little copper through there tanks but that dont matter unless the fish is there for a while. If anything it would be better to get right off the plane then them throwing it in there tanks with all the other fish and going in 3 different tanks in 1 day. wholesaler tank, fishstore tank, your tank usally same day all different water great for fish.

I could really carless either way i just think its totally unfair to awww420 for telling an experience he had then getting bashed .

I think some of the posts in this thread were taken a little too personal. Nobody is bashing anyone; we just feel very strongly about our local stores and being able to view/inspect what we are buying before purchasing. The PDF file, like others have mentioned, is just a generic list of everything that can be ordered... (i.e. a wholesale list), NOT what is in-stock for delivery. This can/will lead to issues that aren't worth saving $5-10. JMO :)

Roc4558; from what I've seen, not all stores operate that way. I know of several locally that have quarantine/hospital tanks setup for just that purpose.

I do hope LFS's are honest with the buying public when they are asked about the fish. I would NEVER buy a fish until it has been in a tank for a couple weeks. I would recommend to anyone to be sure the fish is stable in the stores tank before spending hundreds. I have been lied to by a Rochester LFS (nameless) just to sell a fish. I was considering a Copper Band Butterfly for aips once upon a time and they had one huddling in the corner. I asked the owner specifically "has it fed?" The answer was absolutely. Its been eating all week. I then continued shopping and made my way back to the tank some time after that. One of the employee's were feeding live brine. Very cool right? I would witness it for myself. The fish was still tucked away in the corner. I asked the employee about the fish history at that point. Answer: Just came in yesterday - hasn't eaten yet. Happy, healthy fish eat and are less likely to bring issues along with it. Just My Opinion.

Rich is putting the fire extinguisher away in hopes the fire is out - LOL

I prefer walking into a store myself. I actually frequent not only the 4 in Rochester, but 6 other stores in the Buffalo areas.
However, some things occasionally have to be ordered online or over the phone. (Bulk needs for best pricing, or things that we don't find our local shops carrying, like unusual livestock etc..)

If you had a good experience with this business, then good for you. If they are in business to succeed, then possibly they are trying their best to provide a customer oriented service.
If the same guy that took your order made the personal trip for delivery and took extra time with you... that sounds like an experience of "Personal Service" to me! Not a bad thing.

I do conqer with Gary about Randy from ARC. He is an excellent guy. He's helped me with quite a few things I wanted to try. Never steered me wrong.
Plus I love going to check out the wrasses and Morrish Idol in his main DT.

But that does not mean "Select" people or places are where you should always go for everything.

Many Opinions are good when they are directed toward helping others.
They are often based on true past experiences. But it does not always make it the only solution to something. Someone with an opinion based on their previous success usually is a good thing. However, it's not always the only way to do it.
There are multiple methods for things. Example: certain successful "experts" in the field of science even disagree on things. Yet all of them have been successful in the field with what they do to certain extents...
I'd check out a ARC if I were you. However, that doesn't mean your experience with "finger lakes" is bad either.

IMHO:
Sometimes people with knowledge & wisdom can become negatively tainted against opinions that are not their own or of those who they have relied upon. Many of us have opinions here and many of us learn from others on here.

However, some people loose sight sometimes of the fact that after all their years of knowledge and learning(which is a good thing), they forget that their methods and opinions (however good in most cases) don't make them the "only way to do something" or "the method that works"...
We should try to remember to maintain a certain amount of "humbleness" with our knowledge and opinions.

It's like the Master Jedi that however wise he was, still became "corrupted" that his way was the best and only way... He started thinking like a Sith in that everyone should listen to him in every case.

I find most of our local shops to be very knowledgable in many different ways. Each of them have good things to offer. It doesn't always make one over the other. Some "specialize" in things I'd trust them for.. But still yet others I'd go to for another reason. It's all good...

"Personal Service" is what I like about the old fashioned specialized Shop.
As opposed to the internet.

It would be so nice if some people would not get so "bent" on here when we don't agree with each other. There is a point where you just be polite then, say good luck and keep the rest to yourself. But this is the real world we all live in I guess and some people think they are elite. That will probably never change.
(Quote: I'm sorry. Randy at ARC is world class. I'm not kidding. In Cheektowaga, NY that's who you should be dealing with. Time will prove me right.) Randy is awesome I agree.
However, NO one is always right. :thumbdown :sad1:

So good luck aww_420, take advice or don't. Learn on your own. It's all good. Just have fun and keep reefing!

(why can't we all just get along..? LOL!

Excuse me, I've got to read my beautiful daughter a bed time story now.

Well all i can say is they do stand by there product. they have my replacement angel in and it will be delivered Thursday or Friday. Ive noticed they only deliver on Thur and Friday. Probably so they can insure their stocks quality. He was perfectly honest with me when I asked about a product. If it was smaller than I wanted or didnt look ok he told me. He could have easily just said yes packed it up and dropped it off at my door. Which by the way he wouldnt do. He preferred I be there to inspect the items when they were delivered. He was even willing to bring it to a location such as a job sight or wherever I may have been for it to be inspected if I couldnt be home and then delivered. And no they cant possibly have everything have everything on hand but from the way our conversations went when I asked about an item or items and he would put me on hold for a minute or so and then tell me what size, condition and quantity of those items. That tells me that they have quite a few items in stock. Didnt want this to be an argument or a hassle. I have had bad experiences at many LFS. I never wanted to say anything but Ive had a couple problems at my particular LFS. There is an associate who works there that is very rude and condescending. I used to stop there all the time on my way home but due to murphys law hes the one thats working almost every time i stop by. Now I know what car he drives and will turn around and go home as planned. Makes my fiance happy that im home and hour earlier and still have $$$ in my pocket. So everyplace has its problems. Hard to have a good experience everytime so when you do its always nice to share it. I think this thread is spiraling so if big brother is watching perhaps this thread should be deleted. Sorry

I will agree that the dissenting opinions could have been shared more constructively. no argument there.

that said - the way I see it, ordering from a place like dr. foster's and smith makes a LOT more sense if you're going to go that route. at least then you have at least an idea of what you're getting because it's coming from a retailer as opposed to a wholesaler who might ship you a 6-inch anthias.

I'm glad the OP is satisfied but I would not be satisfied if I ordered, say, a maroon clownfish and it was 6 inches long. that blows.

That would be understandable. But the anthias is going in the 158 and I had discussed with him that I would prefer the larger of the (meds) in stock. I ordered several anthias and wanted to be sure that the Male squareback was the dominate one in size. I am very happy with the customer service. Like with any other company with very strong high quality service can make up for a sub-par item at times. To have this type of service and good quality items is something they should be proud of.
