After almost getting rid of the tank......... I'm going to keep it. I just need to devote a bit of time to it and little less on the house. So to the point...I've got some questions.

1) I switched salt about a week and a half ago from Coralife to Kent. The Alk for Coralife is 7-8 the Alk for Kent is 10-11. It appears to have burned my corals with the bump. My Alk is now 10 and Cal is 450. Nit-0 no color on elos. Mag was 1250. Anyone else had a problem with kent salt? Any ideas to lower the alk?

2) When I did the switch I started to loose all my zoas...but they went slowly. I have never had a problem with zoas. The weird thing is they went in patches as if something was eating them. Also the purple death polys are 100% fine so only my smaller zoas got eaten/ gone. They left the rock entirely not even a trace now just a bunch of clean frag plugs. I talked to Jake and he was thinking the little star fish or a zoa bacteria. I did see one little star fish a week ago and got it out of the tank but never one since. Any other ideas? Also I have not added anything for a good month.

As a side note Jake told me the purple death polys are a different type of zoa then the radio active dragon eyes, pink panthers and all the others i lost.

I just can't seem to get the Alk and Cal correct and a few of the corals have browned out and now white tips from Alk burn, I assume. Any ideas? I don't have a big bio load and my alk and cal seem to go down very slow when things were doing better. Do I need more coral to eat up the alk and cal? I'm trying to figure out what the heck I am doing wrong. not feeding enough, cal and alk bouncing too much, to many water changes for my water volume.

I have clear water, no alge, just a bit of brown film on the glass each day but the magnetic cleaner takes that off. Maybe Jake or Ken or another one of you reef guru can look at everything and tell me what I'm doing wrong.

Side note- one of my sea swirl motors went out. Anyone know how to fix them?

-Also I should be done with the garage renovation soon and move the sump components down to the garage.

Yeah buddy! Keeping the tank. Woo hoo!

I'd be happy to swing by, bring some zoos and see what you have going on. Maybe this weekend?

Yes, you need more coral, but that's always true. :)

Offhand I'd suggest letting your alk drift down (no supplements) until you're back under 10.

Great to see you are staying with it . You can have some of mY zoes also to get them started again , mostly common types but you're welcome to them.I also have some nice ricordia ready to go when you are. Grant

Shane, I am happy to see you sticking with it. The tank can be a pain in the rear or a great enjoyment depending on how you go about it.

Salt. I am currently using seachem regular it has the best parameter IMO, if you have Kent you can mix it 50/50 with IO and that will also give you great parameter too. Your problem is due to alk swing (very popular for reef keers lol) your sps will burn tips and your zoos will melt away.

Don't add anything to the tank and slowly your alk will go down, I maintain mine at about 7-8. Ken will dial your system back in and keep the maintenance on your tank to a low level for now and don't add too many hard corals. I basically left mine alone and only do a monthly water change and it is doing great. I am almost hit Ken up for some sps but I decided to wait a bit longer until am absolutely sure lol.

Thanks guys, freaking Kent salt....that's what i get for not reading before i buy. Lost a huge colony of pink panters like 300+. I know they are a common Zoa but still that was the 2nd coral i ever bought from Clay. My first was a kenya tree from Northbay, got rid of that on purpose. Anyways can i do anything for the coral that are still having alk burn? or just let it sit and hope they don't die.

Shane,

Glad to see your keeping the tank. Hang in there. Alk spike ouch! We all make these kind of mistakes. I'm a perfect example.

Shane that number is not bad, I think you should just leave it alone for a couple of days and retest. For me the sweet spot is alk 7 and cal 410.

Tom I agree with that, the next water change I do will probably be IO to get the levels down a bit. I know what i need to do and where they need to be, my coral consumption is very low and I have a large water volume so i need to make some changes.

Ken if you want to stop by I'll be home all day on Monday working on the house. Saturday i have a wedding and sunday I'll be out for the day. I want to amke sure i can compltely control my alk and cal before i put anything else in the tank. I'll keep you guys updated. no pics of course, that takes way too much time for me......haha

Happy to hear u r keeping the tank.

Shane,
Sorry to hear about about the zoas. I can hook u up with a half dozen frags of zoas, maybe more... Just need to frag. PM me if interested. I can drop off at the next meeting. Or give to a fellow club memeber for u to pick up if u r not attending the next meeting.

Best,
Mike

Mike,

Thanks alot, my alk has gone down to 9. Let me get the tank back on track before I add anything new again. I'll pay you for the zoas, it was my mistake for not reading before I added to the tank. I don't know why Kent would make the Alk so high; it is 11 on the chemistry forum here on RC. Anyways, I'm picking up some IO and Coralife salt today to do a water change to get the levels back down to where they should be.

Well I'm back in the saddle; looks like the burned SPS is starting to come back (stopped receding). My brain coral is half burned...anyone know if it will come back? Lost some of the smaller SPS. LPS for the most part looks fine. Levels are 420 and 7…. I think this is the best level for my tank.
