Backdraft79's 90RR build thread.

Love the way everything is coming together,Great job BTW on diy sump ect... everything looks great. Microbubbles lol I still cannot figure out why I had them for so long and now they are gone,Go figure but looking at the pic I have my filter sock a lot higher on the pipe
to cut down on bubbles maybe try that? I think everyone may be right though with the mag needing higer water level I know mine needs at 7-8 " if it goes lower I start to get microbubbles.
Great build though!! :)

My plumbing to my sump is different because I use an overflow instead of a reef ready, so I can't comment there. A couple of thoughts on the sump:
-If you can raise the 3rd baffle (all the way to the left, right before the return pump) to 1/2" lower than the 1st baffle, you might be able to force more air to the surface without causing a waterfall effect.
-If you can add a baffle (or even a pair for the over under) directly after the skimmer and inlet section and can leave a wide section in the middle, you'll force a lot of air out of the water in the first section of the sump.

The build is looking great. I'm digging that canopy!

From right to left (flow of water) 1st one is 9" tall, 2nd is 14" tall (water goes under this one) and the 3rd is 8" tall. I didnt put a 4th baffle in there because I didnt like how it worked on the 20L sump I made for the 55 I have. It raised the water level in the sump and gave me less room for water if there was a power outage. If this keeps up I might have to add one tho.

As for the noise from the drain line there are no 90* elbows on it. Just the one turn. With the bulkhead I got with the tank I couldnt use anything else for a drain. It only have the barb end.

Anyone have an idea on how to quiet this down using what I have for now?

Thank you! I did move the filter sock higher up and it did help, just have the noise now. Who knows!

gurgle noise? from sump? I have my drain line an inch from the water line of the sump that seemed to help with the gurgle noise I was hearing when my pipe was 5" up above water line.I just added an adapter and another piece of pvc to make it longer."much quieter" now

I would think that would create back pressure? I may be wrong ?.I hope you figure it out though because I know what your going through, I HATE microbubbles!

Hmmm, this is what I was thinking. The small red line all the way on the left is where I thought raising the baffle might have some impact. The distance between the two red baffles on the right and your existing baffles on the left was what was recommended to me. I didn't set mine up that way, but I was advised that this would be most effective at minimizing the bubbles.

At a minimum, I think that a baffle after your filter sock forcing water under would have the greatest benefit.

There are so many ways to do it. I used a little advice and a little of my own judgement until I liked the result.

The bubbles have gone away but still dealing with the noise. Im going to get things changed once I get it set up. Im getting sick of having my stuff where im not sleeping!

Are you using saltwater or FW? The 2 make totally different sounds, and then again after the tank has been running for a while it will quieten down more.

Also, you should straighten out the return line so there is no sag and keep the return above the water line.

Down the road im going to turn the sump around and make it so it drains stright down and the return will be PVC with only 45 deg turns in it. I think this will help.

Well I got half of the live rock in the new tank last night. Im going to let that sit for acouple weeks to seed the tank then I will move everything over. I should have the new canopy and cabnet soon to get everything wired up and ready for corals.

Now Im going to have sand in the tank but I dont want to add it to the tank untill my stack is done. After I get my rock stacked will adding the sand mess up the tank with a spike? Its new sand right from ARC.

Man I love this setup! I used to have a 90 with a custom stand and canopy and I loved it to death then I decided to try my hand at woodwork and well the 120 wont touch it but it did only cost me about 75 bucks for wood so at least its a cheap turd haha. cant wait to see it all stocked up

Great build so far, like Jeff I also miss my 90G AGA tank a bunch! My first tank in the hobby. Cant wait to see this build unfold.

Ill be going to pick up the canopy and cabnet tomorrow night. I havent had time to get pictures up of them being mad and finished due to a dealth in the family. I want to get this thing filled with my coral and fish from my 55 but I know I cant rush it!

I never noticed any spike from adding sand but watch your alk especially if its brand new dead sand. The bare surface will have a tendancy to pull carbonates from the water column. Once it gets coated with bacteria/slime it will be stable.-Graves

From your pix above it looks like you have AGA megaflow kit? If so it should be ajustable did you try raising or lowering it? The noise/ gurgling sound is definately coming from their. Try to add a piece of airline tubing with a plastic neede valve to that hole in the top then you could adjust how much air it gets. -Graves

The noise is coming from the flex tube in the stand, not the overflow. Im going to change things up with the sump.

My sump is pretty much the same set up just slightly bigger. Mine too gurggles and makes air bubbles but I built my baffles on the gurggling skimmer side of the sump with big plans of a fuge someday, any how minus the filter sock, and after many zip-ties for security purposes I have my spa flex at lets say a:hmm1: 45 degree angle to the water just above the surface so trapped air can escape the drain and the water flows somewhat gently into the sump you can still hear the "waterfall" but I dont suffer from micro bubbles just noisy tank in the movie room. Ill be along for the ride I've endlessly thought of sound dampening solutions to no avail hopefully one of our guru's can help us out.
