Barely made the club but time for my 180 upgrade (Warning: Progress may be slow)

Got all the way to page 8 of the post but it is time to go home so I will finish reading there! Very nice build. Have to finish reading to page 8 is just barely where fish start coming into the picture!

I am sorry to hear about the wrasse. Do you have a top over your tank?

Ojos22- I thought I had the tank covered pretty good but wrasses are known escape artist. I am going to revamp my cover. Hopefully the new and improved cover will be more wrasse proof.

poakley723- Thanks for the compliments. You came at a good time. A new fish will be added over the next few weeks. I have my eye on a new fish but have to wait for my QT to free up.

General Updates - New Frags
Back on 6/9 I picked up two new frags. I wanted to see if they were going to keep their color before posting pics and so far so good. In the next week or two I am going to try to find some old shots and show some progression/regression shots of existing corals in the tank.

General Updates - Spotted Bristletooth Tang (Ctenochaetus truncatus)

I have decided that the bristletooth looks healthy enough to join general population. I drained the water from the QT set up and will run a vinegar bath in the next day or so. Qt was set up the same as before. A 20 gallon tank, 10 gallon sump, heater, AquaC 120, ammonia alert, ATO, and cover. The only thing I did differently this time was not run a light since it received light from he main tank and frag tank.

He is still shy but hopefully he will improve with more hiding places and space.

Good riddance QT

Hello cage...

2841914020048177406S600x600Q85.jpg

He did not seem to happy about the cage but I think its best until him and the Yellow Tang - (Zebrasoma flavescens) get use to each other. After about 15 mins of hiding he began to come out and the yellow tang was instantly curious. Within minutes of identifying each other as tangs they both began to do what I describe as back it up...LOL. I guess they were not aware they are separated by plastic. It was funny to see. I am glad I decided to put him in the cage as I he does not seem to be backing down at all during the displays of dominance. I will monitor their aggression towards each other. For such a small fella he is very feisty. e

Henry, what size BB pump is that? What was wrong with the old one?

I picked up a Reef Octopus 8" skimmer body, and BB3000 for my new setup. Just curious as what I should look out for. I bought it used, so the pump has a year or two on it...

Looking good as always.

Mike,
I have the HY-3000S which I think is a great pump. The old one would cut on and off. You could actually see the foam rise and fall and hear the sound. It was really noticeable. The pump would be abnormally loud and would cut on and off every few seconds. I explained it by humming taking a slight pause and then humming again. If you do that repeatedly you will know if yours is bad. This was the thread I found trying to research what was wrong with my pump. With this new pump it is super silent.

Thanks for the compliments I am trying to get back to my glory days!

I see. I guess my pump is ok (same one as you). I ran it overnight in a vinegar bath, and it never cut off like that. I will keep an eye out though once I get it set up.

Mike - You are probably good with the pump. What new set up did you end up going with?

someone is trying to get to 50 posts.....how come you missed my build thread???? :hmm5:

Steve - I could not find the user you are talking about. Looks like the post is deleted.

General Updates - AC Died
I am just getting back from vacation this week and have a few updates on the new fish. Before that though I would like to personally thank whoever invented the chiller...LOL. While on vacation the AC died luckily my area did not loose power or the tank would have boiled. When we arrived home the temp in the house was 98 degrees add the fact that there was 1200 watts of light over the tank and I am pretty sure the temps would have been well over 100. The chiller has really been working this week and hopefully will have no problems before Friday when I have a new unit installed.

General Updates - Tang Released
The good news is my tank sitter kept them feed pretty well while I was gone. I released the Spotted Bristletooth Tang (Ctenochaetus truncatus) into general population on Wed and everything seemed fine at first. The first 10 minutes he became acquainted with the clown fish pair. I am pretty sure they are not friends. The first place he chose to hide was 4 inches from their egg laying site and they made it known he was not welcomed. Thirty minutes later he made his way to the middle of the tank and seemed fine until the Yellow Tang welcomed him to the tank. The next 15 mins I watched the Yellow Tang chase him around the tank. I started to panic a little since every fish seemed to either swim away or chase him. The only exception was the Mandarin who seemed to care less that there was a new fish in the tank.

I was hoping the floating cage would help with the aggression between the tangs. I will keep monitoring them for more aggressiveness over the next week or so. Hopefully things will mellow out. The only good thing about the Bristletooth is it is a really active swimmer. The Glass Cardinals normally hide but his swimming in and out of nooks and crannies make them more active in the water column.

I just read your whole tank build. Excellent job. Your tank looks amazing. I just got my 180g hope it looks as nice as yours one day. Great build. Beautiful corals.

Henry,

It was a rough weekend for the area...so glad you didn't lose power on top of the AC failing. It's made me reevaluate a lot of the safeguards I have in place.

Sorry for the late replies. I have been catching up from vacation and the dead AC.

REEF MANIA - Thanks so much. Just take your time and don't rush it and it will be fine. I am still trying to get back to my tanks heyday but man its a slow process :(.

Roni - Man I am glad I did not loose power as well. Did the storm cause any issues down on your end? I have my eye on a generator I am just waiting for a small sale...LOL. I will probably get on WAMAS tonight and see how much damage the storm caused.

General Updates - New Fish

Saturday I picked up two new fish. A new Linespot Flasher Wrasse (Paracheilinus lineopunctatus) and a Blue Spotted Jawfish (Opistognathus rosenblatti) . So far they are doing well. The Linespot Flasher Wrasse (Paracheilinus lineopunctatus) is already taking to pellets. I am using New Life Spectrum Finicky Fish Formula. The Blue Spotted Jawfish (Opistognathus rosenblatti) is tasting and spitting back out. Tomorrow I will give them mysis which I know they were feeding on in the store. I will be reworking my screen before the flasher is added to keep this one in the tank.

General Updates - New Top Down Box Completed

I finished gluing my new top down box together and tested several times for leaks. The paint is still drying tonight so hopefully this week I will see if it is ready for prime time and take a few pictures. I taped off the bottom with painters tape before painting and gave it two coats of Krylon black paint. This will help keep out reflections and excessive light.

A few top down shots from the new box. I can really see some of the corals are coloring back up nicely. A few are starting to look like they did when I first got them so I am happy.
