Barely made the club but time for my 180 upgrade (Warning: Progress may be slow)

Great design Henry. As usual very well thought out and super clean. Thank you for the updates.
Jon - Thanks for the kind words. My package from BRS arrived today so there will be updates tomorrow once I install the netting.

General Updates - Flasher released into general population
Netting has been installed for over a week or so now and I have released the flasher into the display tank. As with the previous fish I let him stay in his container a few days and did a half day of the lights being out, only the moonlights were on before release and the have been no signs of aggression from either tang. So far I have not been able to get a good picture of him but once I do I will post. I like the fact he is not shy so he makes watching the tank enjoyable.

Good to hear Henry. Can't wait to see some pics. Can you also show some FTS ?

Jon - I should have a new shot to post middle of next week. I let a friend borrow my 10-22mm lense and I should get it back by Tuesday.

Just read the whole build. Great job. Sorry about all the loses, but it sounds like things are turning around for you.

cdrewferd - Thanks. It has been a rough time with all the looses. I have tried to stay positive throughout it all but it can be a bummer. Thanks for the kind words.

Great thread and build, been reading through it the past hour. Keep posting updates :)

adddo - Glad my thread held your interest that long. Today is update day.

General Updates - Fish Pictures

I played around with my new flash the other day and although I have not gotten the hang of it I think I can only get better. The picture of the flasher is a bit washed out but I think I will capture another soon. The flash really helps balance the actinics. The mandarin is really growing but still camera shy. I was able to catch him on the back wall briefly before he was off hunting for pods.

General Updates - Frag Tank

My end caps came in for my T5's finally. I had miscounted before and needed four more. I also ordered some Iodine and Strontium since I was running out. I am attaching a picture of the current state of the frag tank so I can have a reference point once I am done switching over from my MH. I thought I had 4 36" reflectors and an IceCap 660 but it turns out I only have a 430 and 4 48" reflectors. So another order is needed before I can really make progress :(.

Love the FTS. Your tank looks amazing. I can see all of the hard work has paid off.

I do have a question for you. How and why do you supplement strontium and Iodine? Do you not get enough of those elements in the salt mix? Do you keep corals that require higher levels?

Forgive me if it is a silly question as I am a novice when it comes to keeping corals.

Thanks Jon. Although I do not currently have any cheeto in the refugium I noticed it grew very fast when I supplemented Iodine. So I guess you could say it is habit. The strontium is similar...when I first got in the hobby I did a lot of reading and came across a discussion thread on its use and decided to try it out. I liked the results and have been using it ever since :). I think with the hobby sometimes were are creatures of habit. I try not to add too may supplements to my tank but the few that I do add I like the results I see. I have tried a few over the years and I see pretty good results I try to make it part of the routine :).

General Updates - Ordered Reflectors
I finally got around to ordering some reflectors tonight for the T5's so now I have to wait for them to come in. The new Tek II are supposed to be pretty efficient from what I read so I ordered three. I realized the amount of space I have between the two existing VHO's over the frag tank will only allow for three reflectors instead of four. I hope it will be enough light. I will using the IceCap 430 so hopefully there will be no problems. I mounted the ballast already so that is out of the way. I am also thinking of ordering new clean up crew in the coming days. Most of my snails are gone now and algae is starting to show throughout the tank.

General Updates - New Fish
Normally I wait a few days before I share that I have a new fish but this time I am so excited I could not wait. Hopefully I will not face any issues during the QT phase. Last night I picked up two new additions. The first fish is a Red Velvet/Rosy-scales Fairy Wrasse (Cirrhilabrus rubrisquamis) and the second is a Longfin Fairy/Blue and Red Fairy/Social Wrasse (Cirrhilabrus rubriventralis). I think they are going to add more color to the tank. I had them both separated by a divider in the QT but somehow the Longfin was able to get on the the other side. I will modify the separator as I saw the Longfin chase the Red Velvet shortly after playing nicely together.

Here is a little sample...

I love this build thread! I am doing something similar in my basement and yes I too ripped up my carpet and did title !

Would you mind taking a picture of how you routed the tunze wire through the frame? I am trying to figure out the best way to do it as I will also be doing a bunch of wrasses.

Brando457 - Glad you are enjoying the thread :). Did you start a build thread as well? I would be interested to see how you approached things. I will take pictures tonight of how I routed the wires. I did not not put them through the frame. I used some 1" zip tie mounts and screwed them on the studs. Then I used zip ties to hold the cord in place. I was not sure about where I wanted to position the Tunze's so I felt that gave me maximum flexibility.

I know if you are thinking about wrasses you have heard they are jumpers. This is one of the truest things about them. BRS has 1/4" screening and I would invest in some before you get your first wrasse and start building your escape proof top. It's weird they can go months with no incidents and then decide its time to jump :(. I have my eye on two more after these two are out of QT :).

Great additions! I had both fish. Red velvet is one of my favorite fish. Very peaceful.
RJT - I almost did not get the Red Velvet/Rosy-scales Fairy Wrasse (Cirrhilabrus rubrisquamis) because of its size. I felt it was too big and would be a bully. After I did a little research and found out how peaceful he was I was sold on him. I can't wait to get him in the DT. The colors are so beautiful also he seems to be a very curious fish and does not hide much. I like that he swims out in the open.

I plan on doing a build thread once I get my basement prepped for it. My tank is a 180 peninsula style tank with a single overflow on the left side. It is drilled for 2 drains and one return, but I think I'm going to do a herbie overflow with 3 drains and one return.

Yes a cover is the very first thing I'll be building before adding any livestock. I have black ice clowns and if they jumped I'd cry!

I am trying to picture how to ran the tunze wire through the screen, but the pictures will help I'm sure.

My tank will be a Fowler , should be a nice setup. Any tips on qting wrasses?

Thanks and once I start my thread I'll give you a link!

Brando457- Tank sounds like it will be very nice. Are you going to have it viewable from 3 sides?

I QT my wrasses in a full tank set up. So far my wrasses have come from stores that QT and treat for a wide array of issues. So I have been able to use Instant Ocean Lifeguard 5 day treatment for my fish. So far so good. I try to keep them in QT for at least 15 days or so sometimes longer. Depending on how skinny they are when I get them I do one week of feeding, one week treatment, followed by a week of observation. If anything does not seem right with the fish I will keep them in QT longer. I try to make sure they eat everything I feed my tank normally. Sometimes getting them over to flakes and pellets can be challenging. My QT tank stays covered and I feed through a very small hole!

Here are the pictures I was talking about earlier.

Gutter guard from Home Depot around return pipes. This lays underneath my screen top. Notice the small cut out for the cords.

Screen top in place. My screened top consists of 4 parts. The main area and then a small area that I can remove for feeding. Below is the left side. The smaller part is raised about 1/4" so that the cords can come out the back for my Tunze's on the back of the tank.
