Barnacles in a 29g?

I'm down at Port Aransas, and stuff is washing up on shore with barnacles on it. Goose barnacles, I think. I've found a small floating piece of clean wood (no paint or anything) with six-eight little barnacles on it. If I chuck it back in, it'll probably just be washed back up to dry out... Do you think they would survive in a 29g? I'm not feeding anything for corals, but I don't have any filter feeders aside from maybe a few tiny tubeworms. The tank's been up for a few years and currently houses a little damselfish, a pistol shrimp, and a Wheeler's shrimpgoby. It's going to have a colony of sargassum shrimp once I get them QTed, too.
Do you think the barnacles can survive in my tank? If so, how many do you think the tank could support? Barnacles amuse me with their grab-grab-grabbing at the water, and they're kind of pretty.

Sounds like a cool tank! I don't have any personal experience with barnacles, but I've heard a few times that they're almost impossible to keep alive in a tank. Also, I could be wrong, but I don't think you need to QT shrimp.

Never mind
I'm to lazy to retype my entire reply so in short, if the barnacles do too well they could overrun your tank

Barnecles are tricky to keep alive. No clue why as they're no different than a fanworm but they just don't last.. kinda like hydroids never make it long. No explaination from me on that end.

I have many.. MANY covering my glass in my ten gallon, they scrape off very easily (no clue if they're alive but they keep coming back..)

They're harmless and fun to watch, just careful adding whatever they're attached to as wood is bleached alot.

I was going to QT the shrimp to make sure they didn't spontaneously die from shipping stress, and also to make absolutely sure they didn't have any parasitic isopods on them. I found some isopods on a few at the coast, so I thought I'd wait and see if any showed up.
It's a moot point now...
For some reason, all of the shrimp decided to die in the 10g QT. I had the barnacles in there as well, and all the barnacles are dead now thanks to the dead shrimp causing a huge parameter spike overnight.

Sorry to hear that, Betta =,( It could be that one of your shrimp died and fouled the water enough to kill the rest.

Very cool that you've got barnacles growing in your tank Calappidae, I'd love to see pictures of your barnacles if you've got them.

I'll give it a try sometime, they're super tiny so I hope white dots on the glass are enough :lol2:

However I'm am able to watch their little fans move and they have this spiral like plating covering the glass (from underneither anyway)

That could definitely be it, considering I only had a couple of pieces of rock in there with it. I was pretty sure it would be enough for just shrimp, but dead shrimp could have overloaded it. Maybe next time I'll split 'em up for a day or two and make sure none are about to die from shipping stress, since that's my best guess as to what would kill the first one or two.
I'm still not happy about that... I had some nice pretty ones, and some of them had eggs. I feel sorta guilty.

Ah, I've got those in a few places and just assumed they were a type of tube worm growing in a spiral.

Barnacles have a fan only on one side, and they feed in a distinctive pattern; fan out, swipe through/grab at water, fan in, repeat. They also do this to breathe.
Tube worms have a fan all the way around, like the supports in an umbrella, and they usually remain still unless they catch something or something scares them.
