I know this question is a little early, but do you plan on scrapping the coraline off the Synergy overflow? Your old tank you use to scrape and is does look good all shinny black but wondering if the Poly-carbonate can be scraped.[emoji848]

Not sure what I will do. But yeah acrylic scratches easily. Id assume this material would be similar. I could drain the tank below the bulkheads during a water change and remove the boxes to clean I suppose.

Just use a credit card and scrap it off early before it really grows.

Why would you want to scrape it. I let mine get coralline in it and it blends right into the background you can barely see it. The part where the slots are comes off if it needs to be cleaned.

You cant beat a colorful tank with the black background imo. Just have to keep up on it and not let the coraline build up. I say that now untill I get lazy haha

Possibly. Tank has a diatom bloom. Nitrates are 25 and phosphates are 0 with the colormeter. I have no3 and exxodus bricks from Brightwell in the sump. The skimmer is larger than Ive ever had and its pulling out some gunk despite the low bioload. I did add some cuc and some of the snails died... but it was just as smelly prior. Open stand probably isnt helping either. I try to shower at least twice a week. Should ve good enough right?

I wonder if the diatom bloom came because of the sand you added.

I think I found a option for getting coraline off the overflow but it's a different overflow system. Modular Marine has a overflow that the interior box pops off for easy cleaning. I might snag one of their 16" units.

Looks like you'd have the same problem as I. The entire box doesn't just pop off, just the weir unless I'm mistaken. You'd have to uninstall the box during a water change which isn't that big of a deal but does take time. **That one looks like it uses threaded bulkheads, with a nut of some kind on the inside of the box you'd have to unscrew to remove. So basically the same as the synergy but the nuts are on the inside of the outer box. That also has more potential to have leaks. The synergy box is molded and passes through the back glass without a bulkhead. I am also not sure about the look of the gap that will be between the interior box and the back glass using the modular marine.

Cody I just get a $1 paint scraper from the 99c store and physically scrape the overflow twice a year. It's about 3-5 minutes of work, couldn't be faster or easier.

Great idea. Do you use the metal one or the plastic scraper?

I use the metal ones. It's actually like a 5" razor blade, so I use it to get coraline off the back glass too. Because it's metal and rusts, I buy like 5 and they each last me a year easy.

Although they are razor blades, I use the blunt end that's not sharp one. I did need to use the sharp side the first time I scraped coralline because It was super thick -- But haven't used it since.

I know the blades you are talking about. Do you just use the blades, or do you buy the handle that the blades fit in as well?

By the way.. I couldn't thank you enough in regards to using cheato. I read somewhere where you wrote about having a hard time with your sps when you were running cheato. Just for kicks a I turned off mine and things have been slowly improving in my display. I never had cheato in my frag tank, so that one is doing fine. I guess it only works for certain scenarios ( more fish? feed more?)

I would do the same on my last overflow... overtime it developed scratches. My thought currently is to remove them periodically for a vinegar soak and use a magic eraser. I do have an extra box I can swap out between cleanings. Would need another though. No coralline yet I'll just have to see how it goes.

The one at the 99c store comes with the handle so I get the pair.

And yeah no problem! I think chaeto is great for some tanks, especially if you have a big fish population with some shark-sized tangs mixed in. I've seen it work wonders... But I've also seen it STOP working for some people after a year or two, and I've seen it be too efficient for newer tanks.

I'm getting more basic as time goes on. If you have a problem? Give it a shot. No problem? Why mess with the systems balance.

Tank is really brown with diatoms at the moment. I have the qt refilled so need to figure out what fish I want. Tank has tons of pods all over the glass. Might try a copperband butterfly next.

Did you seed your tank with pods from someone else's tank or buy a product somewhere like algen live pods?

I used reef nutrition tigger pods, and algagen Tisbe and apocyclops. Can't really tell which I'm seeing. Also chaeto from a couple guys and a few tiny pieces of live rock. So a little of everything really.

I added some yeast to the tank. Interested to see if it really takes care of the diatoms quickly. I added a quarter teaspoon. I'll add it every day for a week.

Diatoms are going away. Added some bakers yeast but can't say it was the reason they are or if it's simply just time. Fish love it as well.
