Any data you could point me to backing this claim of pc being "far less efficient" than T5 ?

Thanks.

Do some research. HO T-5's especially with individual reflectors blow PC's away!

Actually I can imagine that - it is only the quality of reflector and size of the light source. T5 are pretty slim and the light is relatively easier to focus than from thicker tubes.

matt the source of glitter lines is the single point source of light that halide produces a 1watt led produces the most glitterlines of all
t5s provide even light but they are just as intense as many popular metal halides and more powerfull than many as well many people who swithch from metal halide to t5 experience bleaching due to the amount of useable light why would anyone make this stuff up what would be the motivation

no the stuff inside the tubes is different

I did not say it is the same...

I just know what is the reason behind shadows on the tank bottom: focused light. It does not matter what is inside the tube. What matters is the size of the light source and the reflector.

its the actuall phosphors in the tubes the stuff in them is like gold
also the shape allows for highly effiecent reflection of the light but the bulbs themselves are different this is not a joke that is why there are so many t5 products coming our
its not the size of the boat its the motion in the ocean

the light is not particulaly focused its very even in my opinion t5 provides more even light than anything including the sun

What are you talking about ? Your writing is just one big chaos!

My statement was: T5 have smaller diameter tubes so the light they produce are EASIER TO FOCUS with a parabolic reflector than the light from T8 or power compacts tubes.

That is why I said I would not be surprised if I saw some limited shimmering on the tank bottom, similar to the one produced by metal halide lamps.

The light straight from the tube is of course NOT focused it is very much diffused. But good parabolic reflector can focus this light to a pretty nice beam of light going in one direction: down :)

You were right i wasnt disputing but it seems like you still think the difference is the size of bulb, it helps but its not everything. some get shimmer but the light is very evenly focused most do not get shimmer. Looking a bank of t5s with individual reflectors, you cant see the bulbs and it looks like a blanket of light.

i know my writing is chaotic at times.

i think im being very clear about the subject

just want you to be happy with your light and not wanting to upgrade later

Thank you for your help...

So, lets change the focus to T5 upgrade:

Let's say I have today two 96W power compacts over my 58 gallon tank... I wanted to add third one not to increase amount of light generally but rather to cover larger surface of my new tank.

So... going with T5 upgrade instead - what would be the amount of tubes and their power I would be looking as replacement ?

About the color - to get the color effect similar to 2 actinic and one 10000K power compacts - what color T5 tubes should I be looking for ?

well i think the best bet would be to buy a 4 bulb retro from icecap and take out the pc altogether as for bulbs this is the hardest part i like the look of the geismann bulbs but the atis have more par i would go with a setup like this
1ati aquablue
two blue+ from geisman
1ge daylight 6500k

reefgeek seems to reccomend nice bulb combos if you call them
also Salty Critter will have what you need and will give good bulb reccomendations
another setup would be
no 6500k, 2 15k and and two aquablue

it sits directly on the tank or you can hang it or you can use brackets
it has 5 bulbs and the way then are positioned mixes the light very well also they have more PAR because they are fan cooled this as apposed to the tek light whice needs to hang or have brackets doensnt sit on the tank is wider and flat and has no fans so the bulbs get hotter and they lose power

if you have a budget in mind it would help that way i can really reccomend the best light for you
be preparred to spend money on lights im not talking thousands but think about what you could feel ok with spending
