Best critter so far...

Just went down to take some measurements in my cycling tank (day 8 of TBS pkg #1) and spotted the the latest addition to the huge list of hitchhikers... a dime-sized octopus crawling across the front glass.

Not a likely long-term inhabitant of the tank, but a nice surprise non the less. Tried to get a shot with the digital camera I just purchased a few hours ago, but I haven't figured out how to get accurately focused closeups yet. :)

Cool. Let's see a picture when you do figure it out. I just placed my order. It should ship wednesday if all goes right.

Yo, Jeff,

You've been posting here HOW LONG and still haven't ordered the TBS package? What willpower!

Yeah, yeah..... took forever to get everything in order, but then, I wanted to do it right. Built and finished a stand, refinished (polished and added an internal overflow) an acrylic tank, built a sump and a refugium, built a power center in the stand to clean up the wires, testing and adjustments... oh, and something about eating and a place to sleep.

I've been looking forward to this for a while (and I'm on pins and needles waiting for Wednesday)

Apologies, Dave, for sidetracking your post. I still think the little octopi is a cool hitch hiker.

I still can't decide about the favorite hitch hiker for myself (I do love my many Gulf bivalves though).

But among the wife and kids, the urchin and curely cue anemone (sp???) are in the running. Not quite as cool as an octo.

Unfortunately, the little guy had disappeared by the time I got back to the tank after posting here. I doubt if he'll make another appearance. Just not the right environment for him.

However, just an hour or so ago I ran home on my lunch break and there in all his glory was an absolutely beautiful flourescent yellow-green mantis shrimp, boldly zipping along the rocks. Now I'd already pulled a couple out of the tank, but they were rather drab and unimpressive. This guy, however, was stunning. Now I understand why folks keep these critters.

Still, he's not what I have in mind for THIS tank, so I've got some more trapping to do.

*laughing* If you catch the pretty mantis and decide to give him away my husband is dying for one. He's got my 5g freshwater all converted over to salt water with a nice chunk of LR ready to go!

Just PM or something. I'll pay shipping costs of course.

Blessings, Angela <><
