Best Mantis vid EVER

That was far from the best vid ever, quite boring, really. The video quality was great. I am currently putting together a montage of killin' from my 5 mantis shrimp I'll have it together pretty quickly.

Go over to grimreefers.com and look for slylie's threads, action packed mantis battles.

EDIT: The link to grimreefrs seems to be down ,though you can go over to the website and find them in the video section. The mantis shrimp exploding the crayfish (literally)in the above link (4th one down) kicks ***.

A couple of comments on what you are seeing. The O. scyllarus is fairly small and actually has a fairly difficult time breaking the shell of theis species and size of crab. Notice that many of the strikes are directed at the legs and claws. O. scyllarus usually try first to take off the major chela as well as the walking legs of crabs. Toward the end you can see one leg flying away. Also, the action only occurs in brief sequences. This is because stomatopods can usually only strike a few times before they have to rest and recover. Typically when killing crabs, you will see three or four strikes in quick succession, then the animal will rest for several seconds up to a minute before attacking again. When feeding on snails, they can pace themselves and strike once every 30 seconds or so.

wow... my mantis is a lot more aggressive than that I'll put a crab in and he'll break it apart in like 3 strikes

Thanks Roy that is what I thought was going on as I know they need to recharge. The limb flying off was also what I was ssuming that he was taking out any potentional weapons or defenses.

I just got a low res video of my p. ciliata's first big strike on a somewhat haggard damsel. After four and a half minutes of stalking the strike is very fast although it's off in the corner of the tank you can still get the point and see the swiftness. How to I post a movie online so others can view it?
