Best Skimmer Under $450

I am getting back into reef tanks and setting up a 72 bow tank. I will primarily have soft corals, but anticipate it having a high fish bioload. Any recommendations on a complete skimmer (pump included) under $450? I need to fit it in the sump under the tank, so can't have a huge footprint.

I was looking at Reef Octopus Classic 225INT or the Reef Octopus Prime 150. Any feedback or other recommendations?

I'm using a RO Classic 150-int-sss on my 90 right now and should have my RLSS R6 here tomorrow. The RLSS line has great reviews.

If performance is your only concern try a beckett or spray injection skimmer. Lifereef the 24 inch model or AquaC ev120/180. You can run all those skimmers with an Eheim 1260 or 1262.

I guess what you're really asking is what's the best skimmer under $450 that will fit in the sump of your 72 bowfront tank.

My advice would be to first select your sump and then determine how much room you have for a skimmer (including height), keeping in mind that many skimmers, including SROs, need to be elevated above the sump level to perform properly. I'd also recommend that you not just look for the best skimmer that fits the sump and that costs under $450. Because you may end up with a skimmer that would kill on a 180 tank but not perform adequately on a 72. IME, bigger is definitely not necessarily better when selecting a skimmer for a particular tank.

Good luck,

Mike

JNS Aquamaxx cone skimmers are getting pretty good reviews, pretty sure that is what I'm about to purchase for my 120.
I would research those, and next on my list would be reefoctopus.
I've seen a few swc extreme 120's used on the forum, not a bad choice

And just FYI I see marine depot has a 10% coupon for the next couple days that includes these, pretty hard to pass up a quality skimmer at that price.

Best Skimmer Under $450

When I first saw this thread I didn't want to say it but I knew it was just a matter of time before the aquamaxx/jns train started. I wish we could have a sticky with the 10 current most highly recommended skimmers. Personally I'm waiting for the release of the Q series by aquamaxx/jns I wanna see how much they will retail for.
