Beta of new Apex firmware now available!

Ok not sure what the deal is but I deleted all of the URL info and typed it back in......BINGO

I typed exactly what was already in there but it had something stange going on.

The way I figured this out was to right click on the blank square where the video should be. I then selected copy URL...opened a new tab pasted what it had coppied and it was what it should be plus a bunch of extra stuff that I did not have typed in there.

It was as if there was hidden text in there or something. So i just deleted it all and typed it in and its all good now.

Thanks Russ for helping me confirm that it should be working.

Adding my Axis 209MFD camera to the Axis dashboard

Adding my Axis 209MFD camera to the Axis dashboard

Just for those that it may be of use to:
I just added
/axis-cgi/mjpg/video.cgi
to the end of the camera IP/hostname.
So your camera settings in the Axis dashboard like this
Local URL: http://yourcameraIPgoeshere/axis-cgi/mjpg/video.cgi
Remote URL: http://yourCAMERAdynamidurl/axis-cgi/mjpg/video.cgi

In the camera setup I have the following settings:

Live View Config-->Layout-->Default Video Format
MPEG-4 is selected from drop down

System Options-->Users-->User Settings
Check...
"Enable anonymous viewer login (no user name or password required)"

The last two save you from needing the username/password in the URL but you could use a public viewer only account too.

Surveillance Cam

Surveillance Cam

Hey JohnnyHeavens, How does that Axis camera look? I'm 90% committed to an Axis camera, but I can't figure out which one to get. [leaning towards this one]. If I'm going to spend $1,000, I don't want to do it unless the picture quality meets my possibly unrealistic high standard. I've been through a regular HD webcam, Foscam and Trendnet and they didn't meet the mark.
I'm looking at high end surveillance cameras. And I want the image quality to be comparable to a quality HD Camcorder. Is this the right approach?
I'm also still trying to figure out if there are any HD Camcorders that I can convert to a live feed on my network. I'm wondering if the Camcorder can be connected via USB or Fire-wire to a Server that would stream the feed so I can access it from anywhere. In this case, I would use a separate application or browser to view the cam other than the dashboard, but it would be glorious! If anyone can shed some light or shoot down my Utopian dream, please do.
JH, if your feeling friendly, I would love to take a look at your Axis if you would PM me the public link with restricted access just to see the picture quality for a few minutes it would be much appreciated. Or maybe you can post some screen shots of your dashboard.

What is 'nsetup' ?

nsetup was a url I noticed somewhere along the installation...I forget where but it was a attempt to bring up the dashboard.....

The URL should be http://yourIPorhostname:port/nstatus.sht?page=1

do you have the 'Dashboard' menu with the 4 choices in the drop-down?

No: no dashboard....
If you select that, do you get the Dashboard?

I put in that URL, pulls up the same page

http://apex:82/nstatus.sht
And
http://apex:82/nstatus.sht?page=1

and ("nsetup")

all look like this

apexpage.jpg

^ the only difference between this new firmware and the old firmware is the additional "edit" option (which is non functional)

I probably shudda mentioned I tested it on IE9 & Google Chrome; same result...
I'm thinking I have to be mis-stepping/goofing somewhere....

I'll try again (4X now...arghh)

anyone having issues with streaming the foscam wireless ip cameras? I had it working once. Now its telling me the stream url is invalid in the activity window. Doesnt make sense because i had it working once. The stream im using can be found here http://foscam.us/forum/stream-to-web-page-t578.html

Also, when i save the web cam window in the tiles with or without stream url, when i refresh the webcam tile disappears.

Ok, just a couple things i noticed in regards to my last post. Last night i was doing all this on my macbook via safari and chrome. Tried both. This morning i tried the same thing at work on a pc via chrome. I noticed that rearranging the tiles and saving it works fine. Even adding the webcam tile BUT NOT INCLUDING A URL STREAM ASIDE FROM THE DEFAULT works and saved fine. I tested my url stream for my foscams and they worked fine but the momemtn i save the dashboard with the working stream, when i refresh the page the cam tile disappears and my dashboards defaults to original layout.

Foscam Webcam & Apex 4.20_CA12 Dashboard issue

Foscam Webcam & Apex 4.20_CA12 Dashboard issue

I have a strange problem with adding a webcam to the dashboard. If I add the webcam to the dashboard with the default URL and save the dashboard when I return from another page the webcam insert is visible.

If I add the webcam on the dashboard save the dashboard, edit the dashboard then add the correct URL for the webcam and save the dashboard the webcam stream works. When I navigate away from the dashboard page and return the webcam insert is missing.

Below is the URL's I am using for the Camera

URL:
for streaming (default):
http://x.x.x.x/videostream.cgi?user=admin&pwd=

for snapshot
http://x.x.x.x/snapshot.cgi?user=admin&pwd=

Is there something I am doing wrong?

After hours of trouble shooting I figured out how to make it work. Apex doesn't like variables in the URL and I was unable to add the URL in Firefox so I used IE8 to update the URL. Now the URL didn't work in IE8 but it did work in Firefox.

Steps
1) Open IE8 and login to your apex
2) Add & edit the webcam URL
Foscam 8918 Working URL "http://x.x.x.x/videostream.cgi"
3) Save the dashboard
4) Open Firefox and now you have a Dashboard with video stream.

This is on an Apex and I am taking a good guess this will also affect the Apex Jr since they use the same code

alright updated my firmware. attached range extender to fish closet for wifi.updated web pages. installed night/day ip camera. imbedded ip camera in website remotely and locally.

one question do i need to to have both urls for my ip camera. I would think i would only need the remote url as that would allow me access to all areas.

Question for the software geeks. Where does the software execute that connects to the camera? Is is code that gets embedded in the browser (potentially remotely) or does it execute on the Apex?

Also, how does the software determine which URL to use? Try one then if failure try the other?

More specifically to the question above, some routers do not work well if you use an external address but that device is really internal.

first i had a internal url only for the camera. this worked when i viewed my external url for my apex but when viewed out of network the camera tile was no viewable. i put just the external url only for the camera and i can see the camera tile locally. so i assume it is either or. i think i remember reading it uses whatever is available.

The ability to access a local device from another local device using an external URL is called hairpinning. Some routers suport it, some don't. If the router supports hairpinning, that is great for smartphone app users. But I would not do that for the video. That's a lot of traffic for your router to process unnesessarily. So, I do not recommend using only the external URL in the dashboard netcam tile. Let it use the direct/local URL whenever it can, and fallback to the remote URL is the local URL doesn't respond.

It's done client-side using JavaScript. The JS code basically grabs the MJPEG stream and wraps it in a frame. The Apex itself does not process or even receive the video stream. The data path for the video stream is direcly from the camera to the viewing computer.

I'm guessing on this one, but I think that if the JavaScript running on the client doesn't "see" a response to the local URL, it falls back to trying the remote URL. If there's no response there, you get a blank white tile.

Hi guys,

I have a Cisco WVC80N internet Video Cam. If I run IE9 I get only a live snapshot on the screen at my Neptune page. If I run Safari I get a constant live feed of the cideo camera. What I am doing wrong in IE9 that I cant get a live video feed but only a snapshot. If I hit refresh then a get an update of the image.????
