Big news for angelfish fans of RCT

OMG! Most exciting news in years. I always hoped someone was attempting this, hopefully he will share the secret of his success before we all grow old! :)

Hi Luiz! (Matt from Ca. Academy of Sciences)

John, does this timing have anything to do with Brian Greene catching fish again, by chance? ;)

I wonder what new species he's been researching... John, is it is a secret??

For now yes... but rest assured it's is freaking exciting... :)

Pure coincidence... I don't even think Frank knew this... but of course we'll be seeing some amazing things from Brian, as we have already... wait until he fires up his rebreather... :bounce3:

A special what's up to Luiz! Hope all is well speaking of hybrids... ;)

I had a another great Hawaii trip... lots to go through and show to you guys... on my way out I stopped in San Francisco for a day and a half and spoke for the Northern Valley Reefers in Stockton, followed by a long awaited visit to the largest reef tank in the world at the Steinhart Aquarium in San Fran. Big thanks to Charles Delbeek, Rich Ross, and Matt Wandell... Thanks Matt! Matt was a true fish nerd's fish nerd and came in on his day off to show me his amazing setups at the aquarium... :)

I'm guessing the "secret" is going to be another first time breeding of a rare species.

Hi Luiz! (Matt from Ca. Academy of Sciences)

Hey Matt, it was great visiting you guys, what a nice facility you got there! Thanks a lot for the tour. John, I was there last month, missed you by just a few days.

A special what's up to Luiz! Hope all is well speaking of hybrids... ;)

We are cranking up sequences fast here, still trying to find the appropriate genetic markers to differentiate the hybrids, but some exciting news in other fronts. I will send you a PM.

can someone tell me why did he stop, after such a huge success..?...market seem to be always growing...

There are also a few tank-raised angelfish on the market. My whitetail pygmy angel was tank-raised by Sustainable Aquatics (through their Sustainable Island project). I was told that they're tank-raising bicolors as well. This is all such great news for both angelfish fans and wild angelfish populations. :D

Frank was a one man operation and raising fry along with all of his other responsibilities when RCT was cranking was a huge around the clock commitment... Frank took some time off and has since published many papers towards his PhD. He also traveled quite a bit as you could see from his photography website...

tank raising and tank breeding are two totally different things, although I do agree that both are good moves towards sustainable reefkeeping and responsible moves on our part to protect the oceans.

I am a little curious what all the secrets are about; it is not like there are other people competing to breed angelfish, given the time, money and expertise needed to accomplish such a task.

I would at least like to know what particular species of Angels are being studied or bred.

Well there are absolutely others working on this... and there are no big secrets... but most all breeding institutions keep some things back for a period of time. Frank is still not sure what will be available... as a friend who's been allowed to see many things through the years I asked Frank if I could go public with the news that he again has angels... and he said yes. This is big news for angelfish fans and so I wanted to get the word out... all angel fans need to know is that whatever does come available will be exciting! :)

I hope Frank will be successful w/ C. Resplendens again. I think the most value that could come from Frank's operation is breeding fish that are on the red list. As I see it, this would prevent poaching and any other unethical practices, and make fish available to the hobby that otherwise were unobtainable. Any way we can get Frank more fish on the red list?!?!?!

I would also like to see him have success with fish that generally do not adapt well to captivity, Bandit angels, etc. While I think these first generation offspring will be very expensive, hopefully once you get into 2nd generation and further the price will come down and the supply will increase significantly. I think this is what occurred with freshwater fish a while ago. It's about time it happened with marine fish!
