Biggest Multibar Angel I've ever seen.

you really need to qt, qt, qt, and have a back-up as soon as aggression is shown, when it is, the fish should be removed and/or isolated...
I am very sorry that you lost the fish but situations like these are preventable...

+1 for future reference if the salinity is higher in the bag than in the tank it's not a problem since fish adjust to lower salinity faster/easier than going into higher salinity

Yeah, I honestly was going to QT like I normally do, like I said, I set the salinity in my QT to what they normally ship in, 1.020. When I opened the bag and checked and found it was 1.025, what my DT was set at, I was just more concerned about getting the fish out of the bag water and into clean water.

Believe me, I tried to catch the Regal in the weeks leading up to this, I never tried catching the Multibar, I honestly believed that it may be worse to stress him out by trying to catch him, and I doubt with the cave work I have, that I would have been able to catch him.

But I hear your, if I were to do it all over again, I would have just removed the Multibar sooner.

Sorry for the loss, you have been living with it for the past day now and im sure the last thing you want to hear is what you did wrong... Im sure you have ran through it countless times now

Thanks man, I don't regret not QTing him, I bought from a very reputable seller, one I trust, and that spent 3 weeks getting this fish to eat for me.

When faced with letting him sit in ammonia for 30 mins dripping him, or putting him straight into my DT. It was a no brainier.

I do regret not removing him sooner, or at least trying to remove him.

I've tried to create plenty of caves in my rockwork for the fish to have refuge and feel safe, that is a double edged sword as its quite near impossible to catch fish in there.

Like I said before as well, I'm leaving this species of fish in the ocean, I believe without the regal he would have been totally fine, so I don't want to discourage anyone else from trying, just make sure you don't have any aggressive fish already in your tank.

I may try again some day, but only if I get an upgrade to a much larger tank.

I never check the salinity of my tank vs incoming livestock, just acclimate as quickly and safely as possible...

I never check salinity either, I try and get the fish out of the bag as quickly as possible since anything is better than sitting in the bag longer than needed

Sorry to hear about your loss. I can relate to encountering unexpected aggression. I had a picasso trigger that had never bothered anybody chase a newly added pink-spot goby so bad I had to remove the goby, then kill - nay, murder - a gorgeous flame hawk within 10 minutes of me introducing it to the DT. Turned my back for a few minutes and the deed was done. That picasso is now living in a refugium at my LFS after they took it in for me and it repaid them by removing the eyes from a large passer angel.

I also had a tomini tang go crazy on a potter's angel, keeping the potters pinned in a corner of the tank for a week till I had to remove it as well. Sometimes you just never know, even in a big tank (mine is 260g).

With that said, I've been wanting a regal forever. I tried a Red Sea regal from my LFS a while back but could never get it to eat. Yours sounds like it would do great my tank. If you can't bring yourself to forgive it and want me to take it off your hands, just say the word!

Ahh that sucks about the flame hawk and the goby. When triggers go bad they can do some serious damage.

I think part of the reason for the aggression was the multibars size, he was 4-5" he wasn't big enough to be bigger than the regal and defend himself, but was big enough that he was a threat to the Regals dominance and also less maneuverable to run away and keep out of his way.

I'll learn to forgive Reggie (Regal) in time. Still ****es me off, would have loved to have seen them swimming together peacefully, 2 beautiful fish.

I think that's the reason why after starting with one tank, so many of us can't help but add second tanks (or at least upgrade). There are too many gorgeous fish, corals and inverts in this hobby, inevitably we get fixated on keeping a few species that we have to have but are simply incompatible with each other. Once we realize that, there's no alternative but to add a second tank. :-)

My daughter has been dying for a copperband butterfly. Tried one in my 260 FOWLR but my yellow tang wasn't having it. Kept it pinned up in the corner and it wouldn't eat. I was able to net it pretty easily and return it to my LFS, but now after 6 or 8 months of begging, my daughter got her way, and I let her start her own tank. Apparently, this disease of ours is genetic.

Haha I think your right on with that. I keep toying with the idea of adding another tank to keep a multibar but not happening, not for a long time yet.

Good luck with the butterfly!

If the Multibar wasn't eating it was doomed anyway, although the Regal didn't help the situation...
But IMO fish like Multibars need a stress free 'QT' with live rock and lots of pods to pick on, or you only have a few weeks to watch them die.

For the record, my Multibars get along fine with my Regal

Thanks Albano, followed your posts for a long time now.

Any thoughts on why my regal and multibar weren't getting along? Is it just that I have an aggressive regal? Or something else?
