Biggest tank on Reef Central? MÃ¥st Beautiful?

Hey Joe...

With that many Tangs, do you ever get fights? It looks as though you KIND OF took the same approach as cichlid owners. Stock the tank to the point where there is no need to fight because there just can't be 1 dominant Sohal / Vladmingi, ect... Is this accurate? Or is the tank so big that they simply have so much room that they all have their own space / home to be territorial with? Either way the tank is outstanding. Well done!

Even though its this big, problems do develop over time sometimes. I've had two copperband butterflies in there for almost 4 years, and a few weeks ago one decided it didn't want the other in the tank so I removed the "weaker" one. I haven't seen that with the tangs.
The tangs get along, there is certainly a heiarchy, and I'm unable to add achilles tangs now as the four powder blues are relentless. The PBT's do display on each other, but there is no slashing and they will hang together during the "dusk" hours.
On occasion, there will be a slash or two on a tang, but they heal up quickly, the other times its generally just a quick display.
The large clown tang is the boss of the tank and has an area where he doesn't want other tangs spending too much time.
There are constant struggles with the hippo tangs, as there are always males coming up through the ranks and challenging the dominant males, especially since they basically spawn every night.
If they weren't well fed, there would probably be more problems.

there are so many things I would like to ask you about the Atlantis aquarium--probably the first would be is what prompted you to undertake this in the first place and why in Riverhead? Is there a chronicle of some sort detailing the development of the tank?
It came as a jolt to me that in an aquarium this large 2 copperband butterflies still have a tiff and even more so, that you could get one out! How did you do that?

Why?: I wanted to be paid for something I love doing and its basically being paid for what I did as a kid. I've worked at other organizations and never really was happy how they were managed, so now I can run a great place, with good people. It always seemed a shame to have a job you loved, but to be totally frustrated on a personal level.
So now I actually get paid to dive in a reef tank which, well, I couldn't hope for more. My sons helped me build the aquarium as well from the ground up, so they've been involved in a very unique project, and actually got to see what its like to pursure and realize your dreams, and that it doesn't come easily.

Where?: It took almost 10 years, but we (one other cofounder) knew we wanted a pubic aquarium on LI, we looked at several different options and picked Riverhead since it has easy access from the LIE, and good access to the east end summer crowds, etc. We're right on the Peconic River, so it fit in with our desire to run an environmental tour boat. Lots of great beaches, collecting areas, etc.
Oh and I like the East End!

Chronicle of the tank?:
Where are you located? I give public lectures at reef clubs, etc and depending on where you are, I would be willing to present a lecture. When I get my act together, I will put an article together, but with 3 kids and work, its tough to make the time.

How did I get CBB out?:
I'm a professional, dammit ;)
Seriously, the other CBB was pinning him in the top corner of the tank so I staked out the tank and scooped him with a dip net.
I have removed other fish as well that weren't being chased. Best way to do that is to come in late at night when lights have been out for several hours, then turn on all the lights. The fish then leave their sleeping hole in a stupor and basically can't see and you just scoop them out. Its the best way to remove fish from any size tank.

I'm in L.A. When Anthony Calfo wrapped up his presentation at our MASCLAC meeting here several months ago, he told us what an increadible aquarium Atlantis was and that we should all hope someday to visit. I'm sold on that idea. Thanks for the reply.
Hope that someday you publish a full chronicle of the Atlantis aquarium--I am sure it would be a great read.

I'm part of the Marineland Speakers Program, and would be interested in making a trip out that way. The program assists clubs by covering the costs to bring speakers to their meetings. If interested, LMK and we can pursue a visit to LA.
Thanks,

Joe,

If you had to build it all again from scratch, what would you do different?
Is the shark picture in your gallery part of the same system or is it seperately plumbed?

Gary, the sharks are separate in a 120,000 gallon tank.
With regard to the reef tank, I would make it deeper, probably 15' deep and double the length to 60', with one large acrylic panel. With regard to the width, in many ways it doesn't need to be wider, but I would probably make the left side wider and deeper and have the tank narrow down to a beach wedge on the right side. To make it much wider doesn't make much sense as you can't really appreciate the corals when they are that far away.
Maybe that will be my next tank because no matter how big your tank is, you always want a bigger one.
Joe

Amazing,

The guy with a 20,000G tank wants to upgrade to a 100,000G. That does make you feel like people are never satisfied. :)

Your tank has helped bring the Mrs round to the idea of a silly sized tank in the future. I wanted it to be visible on all 4 sides and was thinking along the lines of 20'x20'x10'. Can you see any problems with that size?

Gary

It is still a bit of a pipedream I am willing to admit. (And yes the bluffing may be a reference to my career) It is all part of a 3 year plan to buy a plot of land and have a house built for me with this tank at the center. But don't expect to see any construction pics anytime soon. I have been trying to work out how much the aquarium building and maintenance is going to cost.

Gary

well since this thread says most beautiful how about this baby...

The silver cans are Hubbel Sportsliter fixtures and focus the light and use remote ballasts. They have Sunmaster Cool Deluxe bulbs. I also use the Lumenarc III's and are very happy with them. All the fixtures down the center of the tank are 1000w Venture BDX bulbs (blue spectrum). The picture below is dated, there are actually 8 fixtures down the center, some of them are Lumenarc III's, and I'll probably be replacing the white fixtures with them.

There is your problem, you mentioned to the word wife, gonna make sure my tank happens before I begin to speak of that word. :D

I can't imagine that much volume, let alone trying to stock it. Joe, can you go into any details about how the tank was made. I've had several people asking me for information on concrete tanks because of Richard Harkers tank being in the area. I wish that the public aquariums around here had a large reef system, but no such luck. Might have to make a trip up to NY at some point in time.

Dan,
Not much time right now, but if you have a reef club in the area, I'd be happy to come down and give a blow by blow presentation on the project.
The concrete tank is basically made like a house foundation with forms, etc, just a higher strength concrete and sealed, either epoxy or polyurea, which is what I used.
You're welcome up here anytime.
Joe

Joe, understandable on not having much time. We do have a club down here, Marine Aquarium Society of the Carolina's. We've been around for a year and a half after our yahoo group got so big there was 200 ppl at a local reefers house. We'll be having our meeting in August, might be able to talk to some ppl about having you come down to speak. Who would they need to get in contact with?

Dan

Those of you who are planning on having Joe come down and speak at your reef club, LET ME TELL YOU ARE GONNA GET ONE TREMENDOUS PRESENTATION!!!
Great guy who will answer all of your questions and will guide through any help you might need.
