Blackthunda77's 80Gal Shallow Reef Build

If you're unsure about LEDs check out Traymitch1 tank. He just recently added T5's but he was getting insane colors and growth out of his DIY setup.

Finally got around to tinting the back glass. Found some 2.5% tint at pep boys. I have some left if anyone needs any. Vortech is now invisible. =)

Hey John I was wondering if you have any experience with RTN? My pocci started with it this week. Did a freshwater dip to slow or down then have it in coralrx as we speak, just wondering if you had any insight on the matter.

Sometimes RTN just happens. Usually it's related to water chemistry in my experience or rapid swings. My ORA birds nest started to rtn 2 weeks ago on the tips. Not sure why, but it stopped on it's own. Usually when it gets to bad you should frag the colony. Any changes to the tank recently?

Well the only considerable change is that I swapped out a 2 month old bag of chemipure elite for a media bag with phosguard by seachem. I'd say the difference in production is minimal but with the slight edge to phosguard. It is more durable and less expensive so that's a plus.
I had also read that changes to water chemistry are known to be a trigger for RTN but wish there was more information on this subject. Most of what is out there is speculation and hobbyist experience, which is good and all. I just would like more of an in depth scientific perspective on it.

But experience comes in very handy. The pocci looks pretty stressed out though.

Adding too much phosphate remover can be dangerous as well. Too quick off a drop in phosphates can be just as bad as the high phosphates themselves. Theres a thread I started recently on this very topic. Many of mys SPS and zoas showed significantly better color after taking my phosphate reactor off line two weeks ago. But like you said, much off the information is based on experience or speculation.

Yeah I read your posts on the GFO, I haven't really had any complaints on the colors but I will try this week running the tank w\o any phos remover just to try it out. I know you had some success with it, maybe I can have some of the same as well lol.

be careful with freshwater dips on SPS. They usually perish in freshwater. your better of with the coalrx or revive in NSW.

Ya I read online to do a freshwater dip but I wouldn't recommend it and the benefits were negligible, only slowed it down for a few hours not even a day.

Thanks rovi I am gonna need it, shouldn't have had done the freshwater dip, and when dosing coral rx I overdid it and now the pocci is probably too far gone.

I will post pictures later.
