Blue Carpet Anemone....

Hey Reefers,

I finally did it, I purchased a baby size blue carpet anenome from one of my LFS. I spent $140 dollars on this gorgeous specimen.

He told me that my two black ocelleris will host it; I'm so excited. If they don't he will give me back my money, no questions asked.

I pick him up tommorrow and he told me to just shut off my pumps for about 15 minutes and drop him to a general location that I like; he might stay, he might move.

I can hardly wait, since I have a think sandbed I hope he takes to that and not climb on my rocks but who knows, all I care is that he allow my clowns to host.

I've never seen such a small carpet anenome and I'm just juiced and wanted to share that with all of you.

Well, I was going to invest into a new nano tank but this has placed a hold on that for some time.

I also put a deposit on a awesome red coco worm for only 35 dollars, man it's really beautiful.

You guys will see my two new editions hopefully by the end of the week.

Nuff said,

Mike G

P.S
Does anyone have any experience with carpet anemones they'd like to share?

i have the best luck with carpets, i bought a blue one a year ago put it on a small rock hasnt ever moved yet, clarkis hosted it right away. now its dubbled in size thinking of getting another.

Argus,

Do you think it will take to the sand bed or my rocks? Do you think my pair of black ocelleris will host within it?

I have the 72 gallon bowfront with two 150 watt HQI giving me 300 watts total.

The tank is going on it's 6th month very mature and water conditions are great.

What kind of carpet anemones are we talking about here? (please don't tell us a color!)

let me just help clarify what Gary is trying to say. typically we're talking about Hadoni or Gigantea (sp?)

otherwise if its small it could be a mini-carpet which stays small

I believe that you'll need some blue actinics, as well as the MH, for anemones. You need that 420-450 nm wavelength for the zoanxthellea in the anemone to thrive.

Wow,

Thanks for all the feed back already. I will be calling up my LFS to find out if I have purchased the Hadoni or Gigantea (sp?).

I have a strong feeling it's the Gigantea but I'll make that call.

Kamil,

My HQI are too blue already, I run the 20,000 K bulbs that penetrate all the way down to the sandbed.

I thought about getting some more actinics which I could fit in the canopy but refrained because of the kelvin I already have.

Do you feel I should get these actinics even though I run the 20K bulbs?

Mike

Just got off the phone with my LFS, he doesn't know which type it is, says that his wholesaler just wants them in and out no questions asked.

I will have to photograph him and have your guys and gals identify him for me.

He is very sticky to the touch and has embedded himself through the sandbed at my LFS.

He has had him for two days at the shop. I will see if he feeds today.

Mike

Just so you'll know, your ocellaris may take a month or two to host. They tend not to jump right in a carpet the way they do BTA's, but they'll probably get there eventually.

Anemones accept any clownfish. Its just a matter of the clown having the urge to host it. :D

PICS PLZ!

Based on personal experience, I strongly disagree.
Not to hijack the thread- this is a topic for another thread.

I thought Haitan anemones and atlantic anemones don't host clownfish? That was the consensus back in 1991 when I first started reefing.

Anyway I pick up my coco worm and blue carpet today after work.... Can hardly wait...

mine is on a rock but a friend of mine has his on the sand so i suppose eaither is good, mine also seems to like a mid flow area as well.

Hi all,

Here is my Blue carpet anenome and my new Red coco worm. I had to shut off my pumps for about 20 minutes and noticed that as I fired them back up the carpet wasn't embedded into the sand enough and I had to shut off the pumps quickly.

After about two more trys again at 20 minutes I got frustrated and decided to let me get near the base of my rock; after just 3 minutes he took to the rock and I didn't turn the pump on for another 15 minutes.

He wasn't going anywhere as he fought the strong current and decided to stay right where I placed him. I was a little concerned as all this happened during the night.

I slept in the living room paranoid that he would crawl around and sting everyone, however much to my surprise he stayed put.

I then waited for the main lights to begin and thought he would move with them, nope, he likes the spot I gave him so I'm happy.

The sad note is that my clowns don't even acknowledge him at all, I kind of figured this since they never ever care for any coral in my tank.

The black variant ocelleris were given to me from my brother; I placed a call to ask him if he purchased them captive bred? I wonder if this species will not host my anemone.

Can anyone shed me some light on this situation?

Thanks,

Mike G

P.S
My red coco worm is doing great and makes my reef really stand out....

Your anemone is a haddoni carpet. These are not the favorite kind of anemone for any ocellaris clown, wild caught or tank raised. They may accept this anemone, but it may take a few months, so you need to be patient. FWIW: Your clowns are tank raised. ORA might have a couple of wild caught pairs they are using for breeding stock, but all the Black ocellaris you see for sale are tank raised.

Good luck!!!!
I had the same exact one and it ate 3 of my fish. It will catch any curious swimming fish it can. it is small now and you may be ok for awhile but sooner or later your fish will be comfortable around it and you can say bye bye.
This was just my experience so there is a chance it may not happen to you.

Phil,

Thanks so much for the id on my anemone; and as I have read the ocelleris prefer the gigantea carpet.

Is there a particular type of clown that does better with this type of anemone?

What is the difference between Haddoni and gigantea carpets?

Bmanzie,

Thanks for the heads up on my carpet, my blenny already got stung but not killed, I hope for the best as he's really small but if you don't go crazy feeding him he will grow slowly.

Hopefully slow enough that in a year or two I'll get a larger tank.
