I have a marine aquarium, 24"x15"x12" that I set up two weeks ago. I've been having a bit of trouble with some algae so I went to the fish shop to get some advice and the guy told me to buy a fish that will graze on the algae. Well I asked which one would be the best for my tank and he suggested getting a blue tang. I agreed because it was fairly cheap, pretty and only about 3cm long.
Well I got home and stuck him in my tank, he seems to be having a lot of fun in there, he follows my school of clownfish around like a lost puppydog. But now I read that they need really big tanks because they grow large. So how big can I let him get before I have to take him out and flush him?

Flush him?.......:angryfire:Anyways he shouldn't be in your tank to begin with because he will outgrow it in I will say 5-6months if fed correctly and if you want something that will get rid of algae on your rocks get a Algae blenny. Obviously your LFS just told you common knowledge so you would buy the fish and didn't suggest a better fish for your 24" size tank.

Is the algae blenny also called a lawnmower blenny? If so they are pretty ugly, I'd rather just replace the blue tang every 6 months.

Thanks, so in 6 months when I ditch him, I should get an algae blenny?

I think you had better reconsider your husbandry strategy. Buying a fish to later flush him because he is cheap is not a good strategy. The fish you bought requires a 240 gallon tank for long term success. You might consider reading more before you buy. And if your tank is really two weeks old you should not be having your current inhabitants as the tank may not be cycled.

Well the guy at the fish store has been testing my water and he says that it has finished cycling. He gave me some stuff to put in there to make it cycle quickly, it was in a clear plastic bottle so I'm not sure what it was. Anyway the tang seems happy in the tank following the school of clowns around, he only seems to get bothered when the triggerfish chases him.

:face palm:

This thread is full of fail...

As was said, please reconsider you husbandry tactics. I'm not sure how someone can even consider flushing a living animal...

Edit: wait, there's also a trigger fish? How many fish do you have in that tank? You sound way overstocked already.

Basically, a person (( who has nothing better to do )) who signs up for RC (( or any BB )) and starts a thread like this just to get a rise out of people. They are best ignored, since their whole point is to get attention.

nanoreefman, I think the general wisdom would be to add a shark and a Blue Ringed Octopus to the tank to enforce order among the others. Let us know how it works out for you.

did you even tell them your tank size?!?!?!! FLUSH HIM?!?!?!?!? what the hell?

if you did tell them your tank size, which i am assuming you didnt, and they gave you that advice, i would never ever go back to that store...

like snorvich said, you really need to reconsider your husbandry... if these are your solutions to fish who arent adequate for your system, AFTER YOU neglect to do the proper research, you should jus get out of the hobby now, and save what i am sure is gonna be quite a few animals down the road...

unbelievable... flush him... absurd...
