"Bokeh" Picture thread

That is mo' betta bokeh! :)

My pic is showing up for me in both Firefox and IE. I suggest refreshing the page (ctrl f5 on windows) as perhaps your cached copy is referring to an old image url.

Im not happy with my previous submission as I don't think it really fits the subject matter. It has a nice background but calling it good Bokeh is a stretch.

That's funny because I found myself having to stop down to get some of the effect i wanted. Guess I prefer the softer look. I also can't see ken's orginal post.

Here was another I had.

Beautiful image!!!

I think the definition of Bokeh has been generalized into just the out of focus part of an image. Honestly, I don't think the actual definition is completely clear. what some call bokeh, others call background, which makes it a fun discussion and one with no end. The reason I changed my picture is for this definition. which I originally learned to be Bokeh... "The blur that you are so used to seeing in photography that separates a subject from the background is the result of shallow "œdepth of field" and is generally simply called "œbackground blur". The quality and feel of the background/foreground blur and reflected points of light, however, is what photographers call Bokeh."

I tried getting a shot of a chestnut that left both stuff in the foreground and background blurred out. You can really tell the difference between expensive glass and inexpensive glass when it comes to this area, IMO. My shot was taken with a Tamron 70-300, which I would consider to be a little above average when it comes to bokeh. I can tell that most of the other shots in this thread were probably taken with some high quality glass.

Cool Ken. You know when the topic came up I just thought of a soft blurred background. I went for that but had to actually stop down to get a tiny bit of shape to the objects being blurred. However, this afternoon when i went online and did an image search most of the images were like Kens.

So, it seems there is quite a range of appearance when it comes to Bokeh. I learned something today that was not related to my upcoming test. For that, I thank you guys! I needed the break.

Sorry, crappy weekend and really busy day today. I've got to go with Jaybird. His apple photo was closest to the spirit of the theme.

Bokeh is really the specular highlights more so than just blurred background. Each lens has different characteristics, most notably the number of aperture blads, that make its bokeh unique. Its fun to play with and just another tool for the bag.
