Are the Queen Angelfish from Brazil the ones that gets the really deep yellow color nearly throughout the body?

I see the one on DD stating that its from Brazil so I'm curious.

here is my Brazilian....

she is much yellower then my caribbean, who has much more blue...will post a pic of her tomorrow..

Thanks for the pic, the yellow coloration on yours is fairly distinct.

Now that i look at the DD queen again i see it too. Not quite as deep yellow overall like some of the queens on youtube belonging to the asian guys. Still a very nice looking queen.

The yellow is variable in different individuals, you just have to get lucky and find one you like, but remember, as it grows the colors can change with age, diet, water conditions and lighting so a yellow juvenile may not be a yellow adult.

Yes, most of the yellow ones are coming from Brazil , but there is a lot of variation even within the Brazilian population.

So you're suggesting to stick with florida / caribbean queens for a higher probability of more blue/green queens?

No, just that each fish is an individual just like any other species on the planet and that there are more then just genetics involved when you are talking about a color of an individual fish. These fish have a totally different color pattern from juvenile to adult and there is no way to predict a color of an adult by looking at a juvenile fish.

Along with this is the fact that the color of fish can be influenced by so many different factors such as health, diet, water conditions, dominance or stress, lighting and probably a hundred more variables. How can you predict what a fish will look like in a year or two from now? What if the fish is gets sick, or it's diet is wrong, the colors fade, look at photos of long term captive fish as they grow on various threads, they do not look the same from one month to the next. With that said there is the possibility of a higher blue/green individual coming out of Florida or the Bahama's but that does not mean in your aquarium it will be the same as in the wild.

I do believe that each fish is an individual as well. That being said, I have noticed over the years that those coming from continental coast lines like Florida and Brasil tend to be more yellow, where as those coming from the Caribbean tend to be more blue/green. As a teenager I worked for a guy who routinely got Caribbean shipments in and all the queens were a beautiful emerald green/turtoise color (my favorite color phase). Later in my early twenties I worked for a local fish store that got most of their stuff out of LA. Most of the LA lists claimed their queens were from either Florida or Brasil. It seemed as if these queens would come in more yellowish. They also tended to have a little red in their trailing fins.

The key word in my post was "probability".

Anyways, its good to get some confirmation, as I also believe that the turquoise looking queen angels look better than a yellow queen, and I'd like to do w/e I can do increase my chances with the proper research down the road.

.....the color of fish can be influenced by so many different factors such ..... lighting and probably a hundred more variables

Lighting ..... and the angle of view..... for example the pics below are the exact same fish taken seconds apart (using a crappy camera phone)..... one you see a blue morph, the other you see a yellow morph..... and truthfully it was neither - but a good match for the 3rd and final picture (fish belongs to Triton Z)!!!

WuHT - I've seen some real muts turn into real beauties, and some stunning little 2" guys turn into ugly bland muts (admitedly not first hand, but from online photo diaries etc.).

I think the majorty of queens are really nice looking however - I presonally have a preference for the morph as per the last pic in my last post ..... but if you are dead set on getting a particualrly blue or particularly yellow one, then your chances increase with increasing size of the specimen..... its difficult striking a balance between fixing the bet in your favour, and gettign full "value" out of the colour changing experience. Its not like (say) an emporer where you can get good assurances what the adult will turn out like as you provide good diet and water quality, low stress, and plenty of space..... example being my emporer form a full juv. to 7-8" full adult colours:

Looks like the Queen angel my family had way back in the 1960s. Beautiful, very yellow fish. I would think she came from Florida. That is where the majority of SW fish were being collected way back when.
<snif> Forgive the nostalgia OK?

Humaguy,

Thanks for posting pictures of your two queens. It's interesting to see the difference in coloration. The difference in mouth coloration between the two different regional H. ciliaris seems distinct. I have trouble seeing the body coloration differences in your pictures.

Another more recent picture of my Queen. Guess you're hoping your juveniles grow up together and become peaceful adults?

Matt,

Do you have any current pictures of your P. imperator? Not to derail the thread... I been reading and looking over some pictures highlighting the differences in P. imperator from the Red Sea versus Indonesia.

thanks...both about 5.5 inches...tried to post more but photobucket locked-up and I gave up...will try later...

triton, it is tough to see the differences in the pics...the yellow is def brighter on the Brazilian...but, behind that, the bodies are remarkably similar...
