Ok guys I had 2 kudas black about 2.5 years old had them since they were tiny. Last week my lblack spined sea urchin managed to crawl over the female and take a few bites out of her and she died. My male since then has not been the same refused to eat and became sluggish then died on sunday morning. My question is do u think he doed of a broken heart? Thanks for the imput guys.

I had a pair of reidi who died within a week of each other. They had been together for over 3 years. Yes, I do believe they can die of a broken heart.

My next thought is that there may have been something go wrong with your water quality, to allow your female to become weak enough that the urchin could catch her and bite her in the first place. My original reidi died of old age, and his mate followed him in death. In your case, water quality issues could have been a factor.

I am very sorry for your loss. I'm sure you have a broken heart as well, it is always hard to loose a seahorse.

IMHO no, it is not likely he died of a broken heart. It is more likely there was a shared infection or common problem with the tank.

It is likely your female was already suffering from something when the urchin got her. Many times infections do not present physical symptoms until things are really bad. THink about it how long do you have to feel crappy before your face starts to rot off (snout rot). It is just that there is no other way for us to tell until the phyiscal symptoms reveal themselves. There are many kinds of bacterial diseases that can affect seahorses and quite a few different things that can trigger them. The most common symptom of a vibrio infection is death (Mitchell 2004).

I'm sorry it happenend. Again sorry for your loss.

well

well

no signs of illness at all at night time though they would hold on to a part of a cave that i had in the take and they did sleep at night time so it did seem that the urchin just got lucky even the LFS where i got them from said that it was possible for the urchin to get lucky
