BTA probably dead

So I think one of my BTAs is dead or near dead.
He was in hiding the last 2 weeks. Finally saw him last night and he was down on the sand all retracted. He is now still on the sand but kinda tucked under a rock edge. My 2 questions are how do I know he's dead and how important is it for me to get him out of there quickly?

For your another question is Yes, you better take it out before it dead and it float everywhere and get chap by the wavemaker, then you will get more headache.

Generally they fall apart if you try to remove it.

And smells worse than anything you have experienced before! Truly TERRIBLE!
