Bubble blaster vs Askoll pumps?

CoralVue will be sending me a BB5000 to hook up to my Hurricone2 internal. If I am happy with it I will keep it if not they will replace it with an Askoll when they come in. I've had the Askoll running for almost a year so I will be able to tell how the BB5000 compares to it.

I think you will like the pump upgrade. I can't say enough good things about these Bubble Blaster pumps.

The BB looks kinda cheap in the photos, but when you hold it in your hand and really look at it, the design is very durable. Even the clear acrylic part is very thick and solid. Don't even let me start on performance, just awesome. I mean, I'm not gonna spend crazy money on a red dragon or better, when the BB is just as good if not better. Never used an Askoll before so cant compare the 2, but the BB is for real.

I have a an Askoll 1500 which was pulsing. So I sent my Askoll pump back to Coralvue a week ago. They checked it out and it is in fact faulty. Now I have another problem. CoralVue claims that they don't have any Askoll pumps in stock. They are offering me a BB5000 to replace the Askoll. They say it might be 6 weeks before they get pumps in. I asked if they could get a pump from one of there dealers and was told that none of the dealers had them in stock. I called 4 dealers inquiring about the Hurricone skimmers and was told that they did have them in stock.

What would you guys do? Take a BB5000 as a replacement or wait for the Askoll 1500?

Take the BB5000 as a temporary replacement till they get the Askolls. If you like the BB better, keep it and tell them not to worry about sending you the Askoll. If you don't like it, you'll get your new Askoll. If your skimmer is under warranty, they need to honor it, one way or the other.

yea, thats exactly what I'm going to do. Mike at RS is pretty sure that I'll like the BB5000 better. We will see what happens when i get the BB next week.

Tagging along to find a pump for a diy skimmer i am going to build. i have a 8" o.d x 6' piece of acrylic that i will cut down to a good height. a piece of 4" o.d clear pipe to use as a diffuser inside. i will either construct a cone neck to go from 8" to 4" or buy a reducer and have that run into the skimmer cup. I want it for a 300 medium bio load. it will be in the sump but feed will be from overflow and pump will be just circulating. Will try to make a thread on the build.

get the BB5000. david at coralvue tested it and it pulls 80 scfh compared to the askoll 1500 which was only pulling 50-ish scfh.

What size opening were they tested at 3/4" or 1" port? I ran an Askoll1500 on a MSX200 extreme and was getting 55-58scfh through the 3/4" port. I've seen these run as high as 90scfh through a 1" port.

Lots of people are posting about "the" Askoll. Askoll does not make a skimmer pump. They make pond pumps. Several skimmer companies use the motor block as the base for a skimmer pump. There are many models out there from different mfgrs and some are much better than others. Air draw varies considerably among the models as well. 50 scfh is on the low side and would be for a smaller skimmer body. Some of them draw 90+ (on a body).

got my BB5000 yesterday. Its the exact same height as the Askoll so it fits perfectly fine on my Cat2 internal.....

I've got to say that it looks like its going to be pretty darn close to performance like the Askoll. Its been running for about 20 hrs now and its putting out some very nice foam.

It is not loud like I thought it would be. I would say that it makes about the same noise as the Askoll 1500, which is basically the sound of the air it pulls in.

The over all quality of the pump does not look to be as good as the Askoll. The plastic casing and the volute look to be made of lesser quality plastic. Even the pin wheel seems to be made of that plastic that easily breaks. I guess it will just come down to how long it will last. If it goes for the 3 years that it has for warranty, I would say its a winner.

I'll update in the next few days as the pump continues to break in.

The BB HY5000 has been operating for almost 3 months, about 2 weeks ago I decided to adjust it in order to get more we skimmate and it exceeded my expectations: On wet skimmate it is creating a skimmate that looks like stout beer, it is darker´s than my friend´s original Alpha cone 250 at the same wet setting:

You can see the bubble size on the neck:

The bubble is popping at the very end of the neck:

After cleaning the cup you can see how it is performing:

I´m super happy, I saw a guy who posted pics and video of his bubble king and the color and look of the skimmate was the same.

Any updates?

I have a sro2000 with the bubble blaster 2000 pump. This thing is loud. It has a very loud hum to it. I can actually feel it if I touch the walls upstairs above the tank. It works well though.

I will have to check to make sure I have it setup correctly.

A lot of people seem to think the BB is kinda on the loud side. I read the entire SRO XP Cone thread and many people agree it is loud. Askoll is much better IMO but your going to pay a lot more for it.

Really? I was hoping to find a new pump that was on the quieter side compared to a Sedra of similar size.
