Bubble King Skimmer Club

Most overlook the mini's but I really like them. Simply amazing skimmers. Not really mini they are built like tanks.

So it has been about a week. Got my water level constant. The skimmate looks a little wet on my mini 160 on my regular stocked 90g. The water level is 8.25" from the top of the base plate. I guess 8 3/4 if it was sitting on it's feet.

This is after 3 days. So how does it look? Any suggestions for tuning?

I love the big collection cup. Much better than what I had. I just don't have much experience. I didn't think my EV-120 was maxed out with the load I have. So I didn't expect a huge difference in that regard.

It is plug and play, built like a tank, and feature rich. I'm very happy.

My only problem is it is a bit loud. It is sitting on some plastic and not on the rubber feet. I'm going to get something to take care of that tomorrow and hopefully some of my hum will go away.

Thanks for your help Mojo

I had mine sitting on an eggcrate stand where the feet didn't cushion much and got a bit of resonance (humm)...put a piece of flat plastic on top and it disappeared. The feet do a good job of making the noise almost disappear.

Sweet. With my Herbie it will be so quiet. Right now the 160 is the loudest thing in my closet. I was just using something temporary till I got my water level figured out. I'll square it away today.

We build acrylic stands for situations like that...no flexing and they look better. Putting a BK on eggcrate...I hope I don't miss out on any sleep tonight :D Just kidding of course but I couldn't resist.

Average break in time?

Average break in time?

My BK mini 180 is in the sump so I'm now a member! W00T!

Sweet Jeebuz, this thing is really well built! I'm a big fan of German engineering and I can see why everyone is raving about Klaus's Volksabschäumer!

Initially my new 180 started making a bit of wet foam but after the first feeding it stopped foaming altogether and it's now been about 18 hours with no foam. The 180 sits in a constant 23cm (9") of water in the sump and the internal water level is at the recommended line and its creating lots of fine bubbles...

When can I expect it to resume foam production?

Cheers!

(Ignore the foam level in the photo below, it's just to show the 180 in it's new home)

TDF - Give it a few days to break in. I would guess in a 24 - 48hrs you should start making some headway with it. Once it gets rocking you'll be extremely happy! :)

Thanks Jeremy. I have no doubt that I'll be happy with the BK 180, I'm just a little impatient...

picked up a BK mini 160 from a chinaman who bought it for his 40 gal. his sump was 8 in high ?? and i think he was always worred about overflowing so he sold it. it hasn't even broken in yet. i paid about 2/3 retail price. Not sure if i should put this on a 90 gal reef or install it on a 34 gal frag? Looking forward to seeing the results

Alright, congrats on the skimmer :)

I just re-plumbed my sump this weekend and plugged in the bk mini. Awesome skimmer.

I noticed your bk mini has 2 stand pipes on top? Is the CA version different than the US version?

The 180 mini has only one stand pipe, the other is the air intake silencer...

I see. On mine, the air intake and the stand pipe is together.

I think your's is a first generation mini...

Deluxe vs Supermarin

Deluxe vs Supermarin

Anyone know the differences? Have you seen a review/comparison of the deluxe and the supermarin? I ordered the Supermarin (200), but I am wondering what I would get if I stepped up to the deluxe model. Thanks for the earlier info Klaus (&everyone else)!

Odd TDF, I bought the mini180 or 200 (can't remember) Oct 07 and it has two pipes like yours.

Great build BTW! All the best you you and T :)

I just bought the mini200 gen 2. This thing is so much quieter than my old EuroReef RS 250. Can't wait to start seeing some gross looking nog.
