Bubble King Skimmer Club

May I ask how the BK Mini 180 or 200 differ from the Vertex Alpha 170 / 200 in terms of - how the collection cup comes off, how it can be drained to an external drain, and what kind of automatic cup cleaners could be used?
Thanks
John

John
Vertex Alpha has a screw neck
BK minis has a slip fit no screw
Pump on the Vertex has a larger pumphead.
Foot print of the Minis are much smaller
They both come with drain for the cup
Mini 180 can be used with a SCH180
Mini 200 can be used with a SCH200
Vertex 170 can be used with a SCH180
Vertex 200 can be used with a SCH200

BK SM300 after 24 hour in a 50gallon tank ( + 20 gallon sump) with 15 small fish and a few LPS.
I will use this skimmer in a bigger tank later, so this is only a test setup. :)

hey i just set up my bk mini 160 on my 65g. Their is no load on the tank. I had a problem where right when i turned it on it would shoor right up to the top and overfill the collection cup. i called and i raised the skimmer, ran it for 2 days with the top off and wedge pipe off. Now it doesnt do that anymore. But when i adjust the wedge pipe to get the water level right below the line, after i do that it starts foaming and the foam rises above it where you cant really tell where the levels at ,is that fine?

I'm about to mod my 400int. I got the pump just like you Bricky, how does it perform so far? does the skimmer body fill with bubbles finally? what about this outlet pipe cutting I read here??

The performance is quite a bit better. The chamber is finally full and I'm getting two to three inches of skimmate every three days. I never got that with the single pump setup. I will admit that the wedge pipe is wide open too otherwise I'd have a full cup every five minutes. Before I had it nearly closed to get the best performance. I'm still playing with the inlet nozzles on the pumps to see what works best for my setup.

I'm still waiting on a dual air silencer too. There are quite a bit of turbulence in the body and I'm wondering if not having the silencer is contributing to them. As far as modding the outlet, I've yet to hear from Proline or Klaus if I need to do this or how to do it. I'll just have to wait see.

I have a Bk 300 internal. Loved it until today. Impeller has broken. They must last more than one year though, don't they? Premium doesn't even have impeller listed for sale, but other sites charge 250! I can't imagine budgeting 250 per pump, per year for impellers?!?!?!

hm... good point.. wonder if we should get a group buy on BK 300 impellers going... (not that i believe they will only last a year, but we should all prob have a backup!)

As always, mine broke when there is no hope of finding a replacement-a holiday weekend! At best I'll get the part wednesday. A rigged another pump into it for now. i wasn't sure if using the smaller red dragon alone would be better than using it with a different 2100L/H pump at the same time. Any guess which would be better?

A little update,,, My 250 deluxe is running quite well! One of the pieces of equipment i have to mess with the least. (Wish I could say the same about other high end equipment i have) Skims like no tomorrow, and never misses a beat. I clean the pump every 5-6 mos if it needs it or not.
The funny thing is i changed skimmers at the drop of a hat pror to this BK. Now i have no desire to,, Well i lied i would get another BK deluxe but i am having a hard time reasoning that i need a bigger skimmer because i dont. LOL
Best money spent on this hobby.

A little confused. I purchased mine from Premium Aquatics, but warranty question needs to go to Proline (still waiting). Is Proline the US distributor?

I'm thinking of buying a bubble king but I'm not sure if I should get the 180 or 200 mini suggestions please. I have a 90 gal mixed reef medium bio-load 45 gal sump 20 gal fuge.

I agree having a 100 plus a 25 gallon (joined at the sump) plus a 30 gallon sump

especially considering my previous 160 took care of it - I just can't quit updating.

The Mini 180 would be more than enough to handle your system, even with a heavy bioload.

Going to be setting up a 300 gallon deep dimension marineland tank a sump big enough for the tank, what would be the best suited BK skimmer?

I currently have a 120 and I'm considering purchasing a bk skimmer. I see a 300 on my horizon and I would like to know if there is a skimmer I can purchase that will work effectively on both the 120 and then on the 300 so I don't have to purchase another skimmer when I upgrade my tank.

Just joined the club, have a SM250. Have it on a 150 gal REEF and 90 gal sump/refuge. Love it so far, this is after installation,

and after 24 hrs.

Cannot wait for this thing to break in and start pulling skimate. The pump is about 1" under the water level, can anyone see a problem with this? I was told as long as the pump does not pull air it should be fine. Opinions?? Thanks,
Bob
