Building 1600 Gallon Bioshock Themed Octopus Tank

Sounds like you guys have to sweet talk the mrs into some of the purchases. Could be worse, my ex literally thought she could turn into a dolphin and probably would have tried to live in the tank.... She now is a mermaid full time in hilton head.... so yeah haha

Are you familiar with the people who buy a house next to an airport and then spend all of their time complaining about the noise and trying to get the airport shut down?

Just so people don't think i've given up haha figured i'd give a quick update! The biggest thing right now is saving up for the 2" acrylic but i did get the foam in this week :) The foam hides the plumbing and adds depth to the picture that will be behind it on the back wall. It will look like a bulkhead door and be approx 5 inches off of the wall for added depth. While that is going on I'm allowing my friend to have some fun with the surrounding art :) Im also still deciding which photo to use for the back wall. I'm torn between these three..

It will be laminated then epoxied onto the back wall. There's really no way of putting the picture on the outside of the tank since the back wall isnt see through. Im placing lights on the back of the foam bulkhead to give the picture a nice glow.

I'm a huge fan of this build. Probably because I just really enjoy seeing people do things way outside of the norm. There's a billion cookie-cutter tanks on the internet, congrats for doing something different. Following this thread is probably the main reason why I've been checking this forum more often lately after a few years of absence, I hope you continue with the updates regardless of the commentary or outcome.

My thoughts exactly! I'm glad you have continued to post because this is such a creative, unique idea. I can't wait to see it done and running.

My vote is for the first photo too.

Wow, this is amazing. Definitely following along. Bioshock is one of my favorite games! Not sure I'd dedicate an aquarium to it though :bounce1:

Go with the last picture, the big daddy is tacky, and the second pic is off center. I think he last one is a great shot and captures the mystery of Rapture.

Making some progress :) still have to apply the picture, paint the foam, and color the tank (1 gallon of pentair green marine paint then several colors of krylon fusion. After that it's finishing up the plumbing and waiting for the acrylic! I'm Getting impatient now haha

Awesome ..

Make sure you test the paints/sealants on the foam before you go all out. Many things will eat foam pretty quick.

How secure is it to the wall? I assume it will be in water...

Yeah I planned on testing a scrap piece first just in case. Right now it's not secure at all haha but I'll silicone it to the floor and walls once it is epoxied. Plus the overflow and plumbing should add to the rigidity

Gotten any further with this build? Was reading through your posts with excitement, looks awesome up to now and bioshock themed just hit the nail on the head for me :)

Im constructing the plumbing right now. The foam bulkhead still needs to be covered in the max acr but i cant finish that until the overflows are finished. Im basically doing a 3" Waterbridge from the Display tank to the sump so the overflow in the tank needs to fit snuggly behind the foam bulkhead. I'll have pics soon sorry! Steps remaining: Place bioshock photo on back wall, cover entire tank in green marine paint, use several colors of Krylon fusion to make the details of the tank stand out, seat acrylic panels.
