Building 1600 Gallon Bioshock Themed Octopus Tank

Ok i agree with most everyone But..

This could actually work. if the Strand board.. OK PEOPLE THE SHEETING IS CALLED STRAND BOARD..

anyway if its glued (YES Strand board holds glue even better then ply) solid and screwed every 6 inches on the whole inside surface. the exterior also covered with strand or ply glued and screwed this would be VERY Structurally sound.. The mechanical fasteners will hold it together .
The structural failure point on this
when the water pressure pushes out it will try to push the 2x apart causing gaps to form on the outside of the tank.. if screws are locking them together by the 2x top down and by thru sheathing it would take a lot of pressure to dislodge them..

I am not going to test the above i just do see some integrity

I WOULD not build this like this...
 
Yes, OSB is short for oriented strand board, or commonly called flake or chip board by many, and while it's strength may be comparable to ply it does not deal w/ moisture very well, so hopefully the fiberglass prevents contact and contact to the metal straps as well as they will just rust out as well as the screws.
Hopefully it's glassed well enough to hold for you, but I agree, not what I would do, and not being a nay sayer as much as just pointing out it's potential risk.
 
I'm just flabbergasted! When I saw the original post date and crayon drawings, I figured a bad April Fool's joke. Was no research done prior to building? I wouldn't come within 10 feet of that thing. The sad thing is that it could have been done with a 2x4 frame for a fraction of the cost and effort and been strong enough to last. This will self destruct in very short order.

Apart from that, you are wasting your time with an octopus in a tank that size and design. They are typically nocturnal and will remain hidden for most of the day. Even when they are out, they'll typically stay low to the ground. To that, add the 3-4 year lifespan. Focus on other creatures.
 
I don't care what anyone says! I'm sure you have it figured out or have something up your sleeve to make this all work out!

A "nay sayer" is someone that is shortsighted and unable to see an idea in its completion. The people that have posted here, myself included, that have warned you of the dangers are doing so because we understand the defects in the design. I have no problems with plywood tanks; I've built them myself and am planning another. I also think octopuses are incredible creatures to keep, so long as you understand their needs and peculiarities. Even if this tank was designed correctly, and it's not, an octopus is the wrong inhabitant for this tank.
 
Mark nay sayer was used correctly and it's in almost direct reference to you. Dont bother commenting on an idea you can not fully comprehend or a tank you dont have the balls to build. Ill make sure one of the pics i take after it is filled is giving YOU (with your name printed on paper) the middle finger :) Its fine to have constructive criticism, your posts are far from it.
 
Interesting build to say the least....How close would you say you are to filling? Any updates on what you plan on sing for filtration, lighting, etc...Good luck!
 
Im doing a large rubbermaid sump with refugium. The tank will feature 6 360watt led fixtures, will be sealed on top via 1/2" plexy panels, and a custom overflow box to siphon into the sump room. Ill post pics as it is built. Im hoping to have the tank operational by spring. I need to be able to afford the acrylic panels first haha

I totally agree that would be a huge concern.Sweating between the glass and strand board is what actually comes to mind now that i read your post. and with the stand board being a structural element to lock the mechanical fasteners seem to be what will cause the weakest link.In that part of the design..

This is his thread and he's doing something a lot of people want to see complete and want to see him successful. Just saying if some people don't like what someone's doing they should keep it to themselves....
