BUILDING A DREAM....SPS Dominated Tank build

More on the new tank.
It will be 150cm x 50cm x 50cm.
It will be glass. Thinking about going rimless, but need to figure out the pros n cons.
Canopy, Tank and Stand designed by me :D and will be built on site.
Lighting will be LED exclusively. And it will be "kick buttowski" :D

Will post some renders. Iv already made the tank renders.
Need to do the canopy, stand and sump designs. And the viscous circle starts....again :D

Guys il be needing your suggestions!!
Thanks to all for sticking around.

New tank?? .... You suffering from Reefer's Compulsive Disorder?? :)

Are you set on the dimensions for the new one? If I had to redo my tank, I'd do a shallow cube.... maybe a couple shallow cubes :)

Hi Bro,

RCD, I think yea lol :D
Wish I could make more "reef walls" in my home!

Hmm yes shallow cube did cross my mind bro, wouldv looked great sittin in the middle of the hall, but it's something which needs a lot of prior planning during build of the house itself so that it looks elegant and blends in.
As for the dimensions I have chosen that's the space iv got so im using it to the max. :)
The aquascape will be minimal and I will be aiming to recreate a shallow reef scape look. Already have collected some live rock reef shelves :spin3:
I fixed at 50cm height having "shallowness" in mind :D
It's not deep right? What in ur opinion will be a good height?

Advice please...

Dimension 150cm long x 50cm wide x 50cm high.

1) Glass thickness, if going with bracing?
2) If gonna use bracing what thickness glass for the brace?
3) Glass thickness if gonna go rimless?

Hoping ya guys will chip in :)

Hey bro....

I have a 150 * 60 * 30 shallow tank with 12mm glass, rimless. Love the look. If you'd like, maybe I could post a pic to aid your decision, not pretty but may give you an idea.

I guess it depends on how shallow you really want it? Personally, I love the look, but it can be irritating with EcoTechs blowing the sand all over the tank. Its really your call :)

And I'd ALWAYS go rimless, couldn't care less how thick the glass is, just love the look.

Hiya Bello,
Nice dimensions. 30cm high right?
So uv used 12mm tempered on non tempered glass?
Sure please do post a picture!! Ideas and advice is what I need. Coz this is the first time I'm gonna DIY a tank of bigger dimension.

Me too I wanna go rimless with this tank. But 12mm will not be sufficient for 50cm height, minimum 15mm should be right? For peace of mind :D
Yea, one thing I don't like is sand being blown around and exposing glass below, spoils the view. Since being a SPS tank can't compromise on flow, so i came up with the 50cm height. Choice will be between Tunze or Vortech with an open aquascape.

Back to the drawing board...:D

Enclosed a couple pics of the tank, it's a softie tank at my parent's house. I pretty much see it once a week or two, so pretty basic and simple. It's non-tempered.

I think you should be fine with 15mm for 50 cms tall rimless, and that'll definitely help with the sand not blowing around as much. DIY tank?? You're a brave man :), I'm useless at it.

Have you considered going with 60cm width? I'm biased towards wider tanks, even the dropoff is 60cm. It'll give you better minimalist aquascaping options. Dunno if your space permits though.

Starting a new build thread for the new tank? :)

Thanks Bello for the pics...:)
Dont ya have problems with fishes jumpin out of this tank?

Though i really like the shallow tank idea....getting the required flow without water splashing all over would be a real task!

Well, my current tank was also built on site...pretty much DIY too :)
But building this new one will be a first for me :D

Yep you are right, space contraints is a reason for choosing this dimension. Need to fit the tank and equipments in this available space...

Starting a new DREAM...:p

This is what ive been doing....learned by trial and error...but i am enjoying making these renders a lot....:)

Iv done a mash up of the cabinet, canopy and how the lighting will be...
This is the idea...but may need modifications :hammer:

Took me one whole day to get this right....:hammer:

Next will be renders for the tank, sump and guts of the cabinet :D

nice setup

Hi reefer859,
Thanks for going thru my thread and for the kind words.

Nice renders, Anup..... What's the right side vacant for though?

Thanks Bello :)
I am planning to install the profilux controller, dosing station combo on the right side. I have an idea...i will do a render and post it.

Nice renderings RN. Great to see a new tank in the works. I like the 50 cm height idea.

Hiya Brett...glad ya liked my renders...spending a lot of time in front of the computer to get it atleast presentable....
Planning again for a new system which will sit beside the current one :)

Hope ya read the doubts i had regarding the new tank (post #604) what will be your recommendations?

RN, Im not to good with the conversion to metric nor am I an expert on the subject but I would think 1/2" for braced and 3/4 for rimless.

BTW, those tank renderings look awesome. Your getting pretty good with that software. Im so bad at that stuff.

are thos eshine washers?

Equipment Update...

I had mentioned about a light upgrade few weeks ago...here it is...
Its LED with custom colours and with UV mixed in...
Purpose: Additional PAR and colour POP :D

One is 60cm long and the other 110cm long.
The 60cm one will be installed on the current tank and the 110cm for my next project..coming soon

Thanks a lot Brett for the input. Iv been been looking around 3/4" seems to be fool proof, but it's $$$ :D.

Thanks buddy! Appreciate the encouragement :)
Though it's been only few weeks iv started doing the trial and error thing with rendering I'm hooked onto it and its just fascinating. Spending lot of time in front of computer :D

Guyssss....I'm getting a good offer on 15mm tempered glass.
What ya'all think? Shall I go 15mm rimless for the new tank??
