BUILDING A DREAM....SPS Dominated Tank build

why the extra light?
Hi rodneyri,
Thanks a lot for viewing.
The reason I got this unit is to add something more of the Actinic/blue spectrum.I am running the main Eco-lamps units in auto mode which I really like and dint wanna tinker with it.
The KR90DR will be set at a custom colour that brings out the colour of the SPS, and yea the additional PAR will be useful.
I am a real fan of Japanese reef systems, they are the best in my opinion using a variety of combinations and customizations in lighting that creates a pleasing display. That's what I love about LED systems the ability to "customize" with the push of a button. But on the downside taking true to life photos of the colours is a daunting task (atleast for me). Seeing the corals in real under these lights will get one addicted :spin2:

It looks like you could definitely get some crazy looking colors with all those lighting options you have going there. Hopefully your corals will like them as well. You should be able to produce some cool looking photos for us too.

I think you attention to detail is what is gonna keep you from having any kind of tank crash, especially anytime soon. I just think most crashes occur from getting lazy and not staying on top of things. Don't see that happening with you.

I agree with Sisterlimonpot, It does make you a better reefer whenever those accidents do happen.

And it is all part of the challenge, isn't it?;)

Hi Steve
It's great to hear from you.
I am so thankful for your motivational words...I needed that.
Coming from a master reefer like you it means a lot.
I'm doing my best to keep my reef healthy.
Taking it slow at the moment with coral n fish additions. But soon il be getting more SPS and deck up my tank :D
The lights have added a nice spectrum to the existing one and it really compliments it. Two things I was worried about was the the spectrums of the units not blending in and also the disco ball effect.
Thankfully both are not issues as I could customize the outputs.
Il watch corals carefully and see if they are happy or not make changes as needed.
One thing I need to learn is taking true to life pictures. Il dedicate more time to that. Maybe a dedicated DSLR is what I will need :uhoh3:
Yep the challenges we face always makes us a better reefer.
Thanks again Steve for viewing and posting...It's a really big motivation booster :)

First off, Beautiful build. I am in the process of designing and building my 180 and still have so many things I want to do with it.

Two questions,

You have the profilux and you have the switch banks. I am assuming that the items you have in the switch banks are in no way being controlled by the profilux?

Next, everybody keeps asking you about the switch banks.. While they are nice, I already have 2 of the american DJ sets. Tell me about the camera and the app you are using...

Hi infamous_6969,
Thanks a lot for the kind compliment.
To answer your questions:
Yes, the Profilux doesn't control the components I have plugged in the power unit, except for the Tunze 6095.
American DJ was my first option as they are much sleeker and occupies less space. But I was unable to get them in 220v.
Regarding the camera it's manufactured by Trendnet and they have a custom phone app which you can setup to view online.
Looks something like this in:

Hope iv answered your queries :)
Wish you all the best with your new build.

Nice lid, always a good idea. mine bounce off the netting all the time
Hey Brett,
Yep...this being my first "true" rimless I wanted to put up a net frame so the fishes stay inside :)
The experienced rimless guys have told me fishes jump especially during the night and also when people go on vacation...so I thought il use the netting...prevention is better I guess.
Thanks again for viewing and your words :)

I borrowed some Tropic Marin salt and mixed it to 35ppt.
Now I tested for Alkalinity of the mixed salt it read 3.64 dkh is that even possible in a freshly mixed salt???:sad1:
Anyone had experienced such low Alk in a fresh batch?
I used my Hanna Tester. Alkanity tests with the Hanna has been reliable and I had cross checked with other meters/tests.

Yep, I get that with my Tropic marin pro reef using salifert test kits. I have not cross referenced with other test kits though. Whats even funnier is the salifert kit comes with 6.7dkh reference liquid and my kit matches perfectly with it. Seems to me that We both have a problem on our hands. :headwallblue:

Hi SneekaPeek,
That's a lot for the response.
Yes...this is surprising that Alk can be so low in freshly mixed salt water. To be precise I did the Alk test after 24 hours mixing.
Would appreciate more responses from people with similar experiences. And possible remedies to correct the Alk.
Thanks in advance.

Check my thread, alk/ wc guide. Very recent. Bunch of answers in there. I was going to set up a seperate system and buff the water accordingly, but I wanted to get more references of the accuracy of my tests. Seems reasonable, but time consuming. I like my WC to be simple and not drawn out :)

Great looking tank. Could you tell me where you go this from as im based in uk
