BUILDING A DREAM....SPS Dominated Tank build

Hey REEF SMAC, thanks...yup was lucky to bag some healthy corals.

Well, i have eyed a nice piece, not a "stick" but something "flat" :lol2: , but it will be SPS...will be added by tomorrow and il post a pic...

I think the "sticks" need to wait a bit longer, coz i need to make sure the tank remains stable for a bit more time before i add the "sticks" :)

Atta boy noob!
you stay focus daniel son!

Also, just would like to know your name so that I can talk to you on a personal level. WHere are you from? I suspect foreign to the US?

Started dosing Tech M....need to raise Mg, its still reading 1200ppm...planning to get it up to 1350ppm, gradually over 3 weeks time.

My new sump is almost finished...planning to install it within the coming week.

Added 1 new fish :fish1: and 4 new corals :D and YES there are SPS...:D

Will be getting my new camera :bounce2: tomorrow and will post pics then...

Today was the last dose of BACTERYA (Equo). I was dosing it once weekly with Bioptim biweekly. Now will be starting to dose Bioclean, its Biodigest + Bioptim.

Did a water test today:
Phosphates > 0.03ppm but < 0.1ppm (Salifert)
Magnesium 1290ppm (Salifert) (increased from 1200ppm of last week)
All the rest of the parameters are the same as last week.

Did first water change today 20%...the above parameters are before the water change. Will be testing in couple of days time and see how it stands.

Still some pockets of diatoms on few of the rocks...but its not gone crazy all over....seems to be restricted....
I will keep a watch....maybe once the new sump is installed and my skimmer breaks in, it will disappear. Il be starting Bioclean(Prodibio) next week. Thats the plan...:uzi:

Nice! It amazes me the speed at which a reef can get up and going these days! All these bacterial additives were snake oil when they came out. Now look at em'! Cant wait to see pics! You still have freakin diatoms! boy o boy

Yesssssss Chris....thanks to all the research people are doing and coming out with various products and additives which does make this hobby so fresh and exciting. New innovations and additives are being tested all the time and its progressive helping to make our tasks simpler and easier, right!
I am still quite weary of going too fast.
Keeping myself patient, but not as patient i will like to be :D

Yes diatoms some pockets of it here and there....but not spreadin as of now..
I will start doing some sand sifting to break em up a bit.

Sounds like it going well. Looking forward to pics of all the new stuff.

Hiya Brett...yes so far so good....iv got the parameters quite where i wanted...except for Mg which i am monitering and gettin it higher.
Keeping them stable is the key...:eek2:

Will post pics....

Gorgeous branching sun coral, and very healthy! I'd pick it off of the sand bed so that all the heads can feed. Also the needs of this one might put you at odds with your other coral as it needs to be regularly spot fed with meaty food to grow, each head needs food--it's hard to feed and easy to put in too much food which will compromise water quality for the SPS. Not saying it can't be done, just something to keep in mind. Speaking from experience here . . .

Thanks for visiting ChicagoReefOne...

I totally agree with what you have said...this is not an easy coral to keep.
And this is the first time i am keeping this coral with so many polyps. The previous one i had kept had only few polyps and was easy to feed.
I am feeding RO rinsed mysis, one shrimp per head once in 2 days at the moment. It is not an easy task :uhoh2: but i like the one on one interaction with this coral, so i am trying my hand at it and moreover its beautiful.
I am keeping a close eye on PO4, testing almost twice a week (borderline paranoid :eek1:) , il see how it goes....
I have already adjusted its position so im able to reach the bottom polyps.
If i am unable to meet this corals need and not able to maintain he water parameters i will be returning it to the LFS where it came from and they are experienced in keeping these corals. I will not let it perish.

Got my new camera today,,,,
Reading up on it :reading: ....and figure out how to take better pics....hopefully :crazy1:

Sony NEX 3D with Double Lens kit 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 OSS and 16mm F2.8 Pancake Lens.

It looks as though all your coral are wild collected. Be prepared for some degradation and color change over time. Ive only gotten 2 wild acros and both of them changed shape and color after degrading to the point of near death. They actually shrank...wild yellow is the most difficult as it quickly turns brown then comes back green. Plus the thick densly packed coralites tend to turn to thin sparse coralite branches. Just my expierience.

Good luck with the new camera!

Now we're talking! Got some sps in there finally.
And had enough money left over for a new camera too!
Well done, nice shopping spree.

hiya Chris,

The frags what iv got are aquacultered ones and shipped in with CITES papers. The frags had some kind of plastic tag attached to the frag rock with some serial numbers, dates etc on it. I always try to make sure that the SPS i buy are aquacultered and not wild collected. Just doing my little part to preserve the coral reefs.

Even aquacultered frags can brown out and change colour :uhoh2:
I am trying my hand at the ULNS way of reefing and hoping that even if they change colour...it will be into something beautiful ;)

Only time will tell....

Thanks REEF SMAC....yes finally i got in some SPS
I wanted to be more patient, but guess that dint work out! :fun2:

Yup needed to upgrade my camera and improve my photography skills.
But still :reading: reading up and figuring things out.
Will try out some test shots soon....:hammer:

Will be adding some more corals....prospects for LPS mainly ....because i am aquiring it from a friend who is relocating....and i am getting some coral pieces which are bit/slightly out of the ordinary, so i couldnt resist :p

I love LPS...cant deny that...but the aim is still gonna be a SPS dominated tank...
