Tom, looking great. No worries in curing that Marco Rock, those 2 reefflows you have should suck all the crud out and cure it up in, oh about 2 days! LOL!

Those are some nice pics are they with Blue leds?
I think your referring to the pics posted by tanya72806. Maybe she can comment on the lighting ...

Man Glass Reef, I need you to come out and do my next tank for me! Everything you do reeks of retentiveness and I LOVE that!!! All your hard work and attention to detail will pay for itself and SHINE through the life span of your beautiful new tank!

I look forward to more to come....

Btw, I'm curious about those "dimmable" galaxy ballasts you got... how will you be utilizing the dimming capabilities into the scheme of your photo period and just how do you take advantage of the dimming facet of the ballast? Is there some type of "reo-stat" type thing to do that with? I've never heard of a dimmable ballast before??? Very interesting!

Just so there's no confusion, the ballasts are from CoralVue. Yes there is a rheostat which adjusts the output from approx. 65% to 100%. I plan on using the dimming capability in two ways: 1. to adjust the color - the lower the output the bluer the color 2. the acclimation of new corals, etc. - this is easier than reprogramming my ACIII-Pro.

actually i think it's more like 75% - 110%. as you rotate the rheostat you'll notice a sticking point that is at 100% as far as i can tell. it's not labeled. not trying to nitpick, just know that some will find the ability to 'overdrive' the bulbs useful.

Just a quick sample of things I found in the BRS rocks I ordered around 4 months ago before they ran out..... It was dry, but when I added water, it seemed like it released some smell and the stuff in the rock (sponges, etc.) rehydrated big time. There was a lot I could not get with my tweezers.....

Just a few things I saw floating in the water

Here is what I was thinking for aquascape, but it may change...I have since taken the rocks apart and soaked them in bleach to dissolve some of the organics I couldn't see or get to...

bkwudzjeep - thanks for sharing. I found the same thing with the rocks from MarcoRocks. I think it's normal. I must say, I wasn't as industrious as you, and didn't really do any cleaning. I'm going to just try and let time, the skimmers, and carbon take care of it. Hope I'm not going to be sorry ...

BTW: your aquascaping ideas look really good.

Thanks Tom! I wish I could get large pieces like yours to fit....I'll just have to wait for my next tank....haha I also like how you are keeping the rocks up off the bottom.

I was just going to leave it to cycle also, but I just couldn't control my urge to fidget.... :) I think it'll be fine, rinse or not. No matter what, I think the cycle is the nature of the beast.

Jon

I used marco rocks for my tank and did not clean any of the rock. I left the rock in the tank for around a month before i seeded it with garf grunge. I have had no issues with the rock since the initial curing. Great rock.

Hi Tom

I like the acrylic stands you made for the LR

Can you provide more details? What size rod? What size acrylic? Where did you get the acrylic? I have never worked with acrylic - are special tools required?

Thanks!!

Will

Elliott - I hate to use a San Fernando Valley word - but, your VFD is awsome! :D Would you mind giving the manufacturer and model number for both the VFD and pump.

Thanks!!!

The stands are made from 3/8" acrylic sheet and 3/4" acrylic rod. I purchased both from www.freckleface.com

The stand bottoms have a 3/4" recess drilled 1/4" deep to accept the rods - do not drill all the way through the bottoms. Use a spade or forstner drill. The rods were cut so that the tops have 4 sharp points which hold the porous calcium rock very securely. I'm not very adept at drawing with a computer but:

Cut the rods along the angled lines. I used a band saw, but a hack saw would do fine - just a little more work. Once you have made the four cuts, shown. Turn the rod 90 degrees (on its long axis) and make the same four cuts again. You'll end up with 4 points to dig into and hold the rock.

Have fun. :)

I finally finished the aquascaping. Its not exactly what I had hoped for but I'm sure once my 1000s of healthy growing corals  have settled in, it'll look fine. I won't be adding sand until the rock has "cured".

FTS-1-1.jpg

As you can see, the water's not cleared yet, so you can't really see the 4 Tunze streams. I must say, they are really pretty small and hardly detract from the overall impression of the tank. The skimmers are up and running. I'll post some pics a little later.

Any suggestions as far as moving rock around is concerned?
