Originally posted by radar99 ... are you planning on putting anything on the outside of the glass to keep people from looking through into your overflows and also into your fish room?
It's already taken care of. I had the tank builder line the inside of the back pane with 3/16" black acrylic sheet. You can't see anything beyond the tank. Only problem now, is how to keep the acrylic clean. :(

BTW: thanks for the compliments.

One question was exactly which pump your using as there must be a hundred or so on the site. I was going to go with this one: http://www.championlighting.com/product.php?productid=17521&cat=386&page=1
A lot of people like the Reef-Fillers - I find them too loud.

My pump is a special surgical irrigation pump I got on eBay. But it uses the "Easy Load" MasterFlex pump heads. Here's a pic:

Anything that looks like that will do an excellent job.

Morning, Alan. Yes, eBay. Do a search for Masterflex - you'll find plenty to look at. Also, go to www.coleparmer.com and read about their "Easy Load" heads for peristaltic pumps. Cole-Parmer makes the Masterflex line of pumps. Their site has lots of user/instruction manuals with good info.
Tom
I found this on E-Bay. Cole Parmer Do you attach extra heads to the front (stacked) to get three dosing? Sorry but this is new to me. If you could give me the part number for your pump and the heads maybe that would help.
Thanks

One of the cleanest installations I've ever seen.

Your light rack is an inspiration for my next build. I love the beananimal style overflows.

You have tons of room for SPS to fill that tank right in! I'm a little concerned that you didn't have enough live rock? But I could be wrong there.

Also, did you get us PAR readings yet? I'm so curious to see the lighting specs and PAR written out, or one of those lovely PAR photos that shows the nubmers on your FTS.

Keep up the amazing work.

and what kind of hose does it take?
I use Norprene. Tygon is also good. Cole-Parmer makes PharMed (search that term on eBay) which is a very stable Norprene/Tygon, good for 4000 hours of use before it deteriorates. MasterFlex heads accept different size tubing. Each size has a number like #16, #24, etc. The size designates the inside/outside diameter of the tubing. The larger the inside diameter, the more liquid will be pumped for a given motor speed/time combination. I happen to use size #17.

Tom your build is inspiration as usual.

I did the lights out for 3 days to kill back my hair algae. I now that I have better flow and doing w/c a little more often it is gone.

That model on eBay would probably work for you. Most of them will handle what we need.

Alan, yes - you stack additional heads by using longer attachment screws. You can buy them from Cole-Parmer (expensive) or you can buy a length of #8-32 SS threaded rod and make your own (cheap).

I use a 7518-10 head, but many other models will also work. If you are thinking about getting into the perstaltic pump thing, I would suggest you go to the Cole-Parmer site and study the user manuals for the pumps and heads. It'll give you a feel for what you really need, etc. One point - these industrial pumps are not quiet. They aren't something you want to run in your living room. That said, I can just barely hear mine outside the fish room - and that's fine - I have it set to run for 2 hours between midnight and 6:00AM.

yeah, being able to use multiple sized tubing is worth its weight in gold. That means you can alternate viscosity and volume in a much more flexible manner, without incurring new pump costs.

I'm beggining to also think I might need a little more (100lbs). Although what you see in the pics is close to 200lbs. Those are BIG pieces. Some are 18" in diameter.

I have measured the lights with my PAR meter. Ranges from over 1000 just below the surface to 375 at the sand bed. I'll try to do a FTS with PAR numbers soon. :D

And thank you very much for the very kind words.

Hi Eric. Yup, first day was today. We'll see how it goes. It's just so exasperating - you put in so much work to get it all just right, and then ....

imo, i think it would be far easier to limit your phosphate by running some GFO and raise your magnesium to 1500, both of these will aide in your battle.

Do you know either of these values?

Hi Tom
Can u give me a link to the labels u r using? R they special because of humidity or just regular labels? Need to get more organized in the fish room. thanks

Great build!

Great build!

Great build tom. I'm actually in the process of putting together my first tank. I most say your build is a great inspiration. Your tank looks great. I just placed an order with Randy over at Concept Aquariums last week. A 92gal. (48x21x21) with starphire on the 3 viewing sides. Looking at your tank, I now know I made the right decision going with Concept Aquariums. Plus dealing with Randy made the whole experience a pleasure, he has to be one of the nicest salesman I ever dealt with. Anyway, good luck with the rest of your build.

I hope my tanks journey over to the east coast goes as smooth as yours.

Pete.

PO4 = .01 and Mg = 1330. I'm thinking my problem is that the rocks themselves still harbor PO4.

I'm not using anything special, other than the fact that the Brother TZ tapes are the ones that say "Strong Adhesive". I use them in a Brother P-touch 1180 labeler.

First of all, Pete:

Thank you, very much. I appreciate your comments. Setting up your first tank is an exciting (and sometimes frightening) time - but you've found the right place for support. RC is full of folks with extensive knowledge in reefkeeping that are more than willing to share it. If you haven't already, join a local club. You'll be glad you did.

Randy Cameron at Concept Aquarium is absolutely fantastic to deal with - and he builds a great product!

Good luck and success with your build! Think about starting a build thread over on the Reef Discussion forum. It's a great way to check out your ideas with members. Might avoid a mistake or two that way. ;)
