Building Sump

Tank drilled, going to build the sump now. I've got the whole design hammered out, just one quick question: any specific kind of silicone to use to seal the baffles into place? I've heard horror stories about the wrong kind of silicone being used before, I believe. I used a clear water proof silicone on my shower head at one point. Same thing?

Not sure. I know you don't want to use something with mold inhibitors in it... I've always just grabbed tubes of silicone from the LFS for that stuff to be safe. For future reference it would be nice to know if something from the box stores is ok to use though.

I used silicone specifically formulated for aquarium use. Some people swear by GE I. However if you read the tube & their product information sheet they say "Not for aquarium use or for constant submersion". IMO for the couple extra bucks it's worth not worrying about it.

I'd be wary of anything that

a) didn't say aquarium safe

or

b) didn't list all ingredients

I'd take either of the two, but if it said neither I'd avoid it.

Use the stuff from a LFS! Also if you go to Lowes or Home Depot they have the silicone blades to make your seams look good!

GE II has a anti mold agent in it that you dont want to have in your tank. my friend destroyed his reef with that stuff. LFS is the best way to go.

I just use the All glass stuff from the LFS:

Just make sure where ever you use it, the area is well ventillated. I swear I had an out of body experience by using it in the basement. Head upside down, inside a tank, suckin in fumes. It was serious hot-box action. Felt like Jeff Spicoli....

use glass baffles if you can. I just had ACE HW cut me (3) 1/4" baffles with one polished edge at $8 a piece. You might be able to find cheaper.

and make sure the exposed edge is polished. or you could seriously cut your hand up.

Nice. Thanks for the input everyone. I am definitely planning on using glass for the baffles. I'll probably hit up lowes or something. Definitely glad I asked about the silicone though. That could have been a disaster. What a funny hobby this is, where the complete dismantling of everything we've built is just one single wrong move away. Can't get enough though!
