bulkhead question

Does it matter which way the bulkhead is installed as long as the rubber grommet is on the wet side?

I'm a little short on space and it would be nice if the longer end of the bulkhead was inside the sump, rather than sticking out.

Thanks

Jim

The issue you will have is with water leaking past the threads for the bulkhead. in this case your best option is to have the gasket on the outside.

As you mention, bulkheads are designed so the the rubber grommet is on the wet side. They are also designed to have the threaded side on the dry side. There are two problems with having the threads on the wet side.

1. when turning the nut it will be turning against the rubber grommet which could cause it to kink and leak. It would also make it harder to tighten sufficiently.

2. As was mentioned by jlfnjlf it could cause the bulkhead to leak through the threads.

You would be better off cutting off some of the bulkhead end or putting the bulkhead in completely backwards with the rubber grommet on the dry side instead. IME this would have a less chance of leaking. BTW don't over tighten the bulkhead nut as some of them crack very easily ( from experience).

A couple things about bulkheads--

You know those brittle ones that online places sell you, with one rubber gasket? Yeah, those suck. They crack and aren't made well. Hayward brand bulkheads are what public aquariums and industrial applications use. They are sturdy and come with 2 rubber gaskets. You can find them, as well as lots of other cool stuff, at www.haywardindustrial.com
