butterflies in reefs

Interesting. I have a punctuatofasciatus pelewenis hybrid in my FO. Back when the tank was first set up, I kept a few corals in there. It didn't touch any of then (softies, mushrooms, euphyllia, SPS. It also has a very different mouth structure than any of the other butterflies I keep, so that might be indicative of some other sort of specialized diet. Mine eats any fish food I offer, even pellets, with gusto.

Where are you getting your frozen blackworms? I've got my new copperband eating live blackworms in QT. I'd like to try frozen ones so I don't need to make weekly trips to the pet store to by the live ones.

You can keep live blackworms in your refrigerator for 3 weeks easy. Just put some ro/di water in with them (I use just enough to mostly cover them, but some use less and some use more), and pour it off and put some fresh water in every day or two. Better than a weekly trip to the lfs but not as convenient as frozen.

My Falcula is in the reef for 3 weeks now. Is eating like crazy (even in my hands). Until now only ate some zooanthus polips.
I think everything will be ok.

Well, Merry Christmas to me :) I couldn't resist this one. I haven't liked the almost all muddy yellow backed ones that have been around lately. When I saw this dark backed one, I had to jump on it!

Nice! Christmas presents can be so much more tailored to your preferences if you buy them yourself.

So true  Oh and I may or may not have accidentally dropped the C. robustus into my shopping cart at the same time :wildone:

Peter the pelwensis and punctuatofasciatus are two different fish very similar in color but paterns and shapes are a bit different. I wonder if you would trust the pelwensis in your reef tank. Thanks and Merry Christmas everyone

Honestly, I probably wouldn't trust either in my reef ;)

Is it possible to chance a C. flavirostris, C. xanthocephalus, and possibly H. chrysostomus (these are newly in QT so we'll see...) with anything? So far mushrooms, gsp, and aiptasia are readily devoured. I feel like trying something like montipora, leathers, euphyllia, etc. These are inexpensive enough as frags where I may as well try. But what about an anemone like a BTA or LTA? The fact that aiptasia was eaten makes me worry, but those are much smaller. Thoughts?

Love the declivis, Peter! Those are growing on me.

Alexa, my saddleback ate euphyllia. I'd guess the yellow face would do the same. I would also be worried about BTA's... they are very tasty to BF's IME. But maybe a pair of aggressive clowns would keep them away?

Thanks, I do like this declivis. I'm also going to try the robustus in the reef, since they are supposedly from rocky areas with little/no coral.

If I can find a reasonably priced euphyllia frag I may try it anyway just to see :). I won't get my hopes up. Sad about the BTA; I'd love one in that tank. If it gets too much attention I can move it in with my eel or try the clown idea!

Good luck with the robustus in a reef!

This is one of the tough problems I'll face next year when I combine tanks. I'll need to add 2 each of C. burgessi, tinkeri, declivis and mitratus not to mention the semilarvatus to what will be a SPS tank... Nervous as hell as I do not want to get rid of the BF's...

The first eight you might have a chance with but you better find another home for the semilarvatus. That's a nice group of BF's though, I want some pics

concerned about Butterflyfish destruction?

just imagine what damage a large Angelfish might inflict :)

Nice Chaetodonts, everyone!

You're killing me Gary. I would like more than anything to try a Majestic or similar sized angel in my reef. Just when I talk myself out of it I see a post like yours.
