Buy from others in the hobby rather than LFS

...aquacultured is the way to go
..if we invested a little more time/effort/money into aquacultered livestock this planet would be better off.

We would also increase the capita of the U.S.[/B]

All of you have good points. The main reason I started this thread is because I don't have 50/90 yet so I cannot see or purchase things from people on this site. I wish I could support fellow reefers, but I guess I'll just have to stick with my lfs and wild caught for now.

why not just start a thread to consantly keep bringing up the same topic in each post till you get 50??lol...j.k.in

The 50 posts 90 days thing is a precaution, please understand that it is there to protect you and the rest of us. The chance of someone with a certain amount of posts and a respectable amount of time invested in the board is less likely to "rip someone off", but unfortunately even then the chance still exists. Personally I stand behind the rule, and to be completely honest I won't buy from anyone with less than 500 posts generally, mainly because I know it takes time and knowledge to gain a large amount of posts like that (and they have to be actual posts or the mods will catch it) and I feel that a reefer who has been in the hobby for a while is someone generally worth trusting. Not trying to put you down or say your untrustworthy, but the board is a privilege and eventually you'll be far beyond the 50/90.

In the meantime there is always craiglist...or even better, your local club.

I have absolutely no problem with people not being allowed to sell things until they have at least 50/90. I'm talking about buying. How are we supposed to stock our tanks and get equipment to set our tanks up in the first place if we can't buy from others in the hobby? (Lord knows none of us want to buy a new set up at a lfs). My tank wouldn't even be set up if it wasn't for the equipment I bought from someone on this very forum.

hey elly you seem an ok person to me who is just genuinely upset about the 50/90 thing, by the look of things your close at the moment anyhow, another month and a dozen posts, just let it be and get involved in the forums a little more, before you even realise it you will be there, but you have had a couple of hints now about your posts, let it go, start a thread about your system and long term plan in the new to the hobby, makes some buddies and you will get to the magic numbers very quickly and properly as well :)

I tend to mix. I've bought stuff from other reefers and I've gone the LFS route. I make sure that what I buy is aquacultured though. My experience with maricultured is a nice white birdsnest decorating a shelf now. As far as the buying from people here, i've seen a few too many rip offs so Im a bit gun shy about doing it.

Its not hard to rack up a few posts. Someone asks what GFO they should use, tell them what you use and why. You've helped them, you've bumped your count with a meaningful post...everyone is happy.

I just added another post to my collection WOOHOO!

What is a "meaningful post"? is this a meaningful post? i mean i was making a getting info about a skimmer i wanted to buy and the next day i couldnt view the thread.... what is the meaning of life? is it the same as a "meaninful poST"? their isnt alot of meaning by isolating beginners from buying quality equipment at a not so quality price. maybe its hard for me to say anything meaningful... ask my wife she says im stupid all the time...lol its a conspiracy man,lol.... besides i dont understand what rc has to gain by not letting us, "less meaningful people" view the selling forums.... perhaps they are afraid. i would think in these economic times, fellow hobbiest would more than welcome selling something to help out the "less meaningful" ones like me... Rick:wavehand::hammer::hmm3::bounce1::bounce3::bounce2::lol:

I agree to an extent. All my equipment is used and coral when I first set up my tank were from fellow reefers. I made mistakes starting up and if I would have paid retail prices for the coral and equipment I would have been out of the hobby due to the financial loss. I always buy all my fish from a LFS. I just like to see the fish in person to make sure it is healthy and eating. Also if they don't have it they will find it and order it for me.

As far as "meaningful posts" well, it's their forum and and they get to decide. I don't agree with it but oh well.

@SWINGRRRR "Buying/selling is a privilege" uh, no it's not. It's just that they say it is so you believe it and "The site is about INFOMATION!!" again no, it's about making money. With that being said, if someone doesn't like the rules they can go elsewhere.

I doubt the makers of the site started it as a profit venture. The buy/sell forums are a perk for contributing members.

BTW: A meaningful post is a helpful one. Nice tank, +1, subscribed, and most of my posts are not examples of this

Not even sure why I am bumping this thread since hes just whining about not being able to buy/sell.

I have a small thread count and a large addiction to buying coral. Instead of conducting my own research by just reading, I will begin to interact with my fellow reefers. I will soon be back to frequenting the selling forums.

It's fine. What I'm more upset about is that I got burned by a seller and now I can't leave feedback but he can. He basically ran off with half my money and I can't do anything about it. I'd like to be able to find some different (honest) sellers to purchase from, but I can't. When I slipped through the cracks when I first joined this site. I made several LARGE purchases from a gal on here and things went by very smoothly. I can't leave her feedback either.

Maybe you should have waited for 50/90 before you started buying stuff online from people you don't know? Then you could have left feedback.

You can buy from hobbyists locally; It doesn't have to be online, and that way you can see what you're buying. Many people in my local club buy from AND sell to the LFS, so often times buying livestock there is the same as buying from another hobbyist. :)

start a thread about your system

And where do I start said thread? I don't see a "Showcase" or "Your Tanks" category. I tried to show my tank thread that I have on another forum and I was told that if I post a link to another website ever again I will be forbidden to post ANYTHING on here.:thumbdown

And I would be up to 50 posts if a mod didn't delete 20 of my count because they weren't "meaningful".

And where do I start said thread?

Umm there's tons of build threads in the Reef Discussion. Or if you FO, then there's a Fish Only/Aggressive Section. Or if you have Seahorses, then guess, what, there's a Seahorse/Pipefish section. Zoas, Zoa section, SPS, SPS section. On and on.........................

Put it where it fits. Kinda make me wonder why you went right to the Buy/Sell forums instead of getting acquainted first.

your more than very welcome to join us in the new to the hobby forum, just start a thread with a brief description and a picture of your tank, some members will then post replies and your up and running, a little tip, stop whinning about the post count:)

I thought those threads were for discussing the topic, not showing your tank. Maybe we should have a showcase thread....

I went to the for sale threads because if I hadn't, I wouldn't have a tank to show. I bought all of my equipment from someone on here and half of my live rock from another member.
