Calvin415's ADA 60-P Build

nice! Ever look into possum wrasses?

I have, just not sure how prone they are to jumping...

Looks good. Great pics

Thanks!

Awesome Setup. Tank looks great.

Thanks!

Sorry for the lack of updates everyone, I've been working on fighting some dinos from my attempt at breeding my shrimp, but I'm getting close to eradicating them and getting some color back in some of my SPS. I took the turf scrubber offline since I was no longer getting any turf growth (for now); I think the tank has been too sterile without fish. I've since been adding some fish, feeding heavy, and setup a diy kalk reactor to help fight the dinos. So far so good, just hoping things continue to improve as they have over the last couple weeks. I've also done a little house cleaning, and dumped a few corals I felt were taking up too much room or not coloring up, and picked up a few more. I have a bleeding apple scolly, and a solid red scolly that should arrive some time this week to go with the war paint scolly I picked up last week. Also working on an acan garden, so once I have things settled in, I'll snap some new pics.

Thanks for the interest.

can you show some pics of the kalkwasser reactor?

totally separate question but what return pump are you using?

Return pump is a Sicce 2.0

Here are some old build pics from about 7 years ago... Mine looks different, but same parts. It fits in line on my ATO, since my ATO is regulated by a float valve (not a switch) it adds kalkwasser drip by drip so I never get un-dissolved kalk in the line.

I like this, I have a few questions though. Your ATO is by float switch, so when the water level goes down in your sump what moves the water through this kalk reactor into your sump, pressure? What kind of kalk mix do you use? Tank looks great btw:thumbsup:

awesome thanks! that is exactly what I've been wanting to build. where did you get the filter housing?

does the pvc pipe fit in the cap of housing with just pressure or is it glued or threaded?

No, it is a float valve, the water line is gravity fed from a 55g barrel in my garage so there is always a little pressure on the valve. I'm currently using Pickling Lime from Mrs Wages...

Thanks!

Picked mine up from a dismantled RO/DI unit, but you can buy single units from places like Bulk Reef Supply. I just cut the pipe the right length to be snug between the top and bottom of the canister. You could always glue it in if you like. :)

What I like best about this setup is you don't get the bicarbonate crust since the unit is sealed, and the kalk reactor is always topped off. Now because there isn't a mixing device the kalkwasser may not be fully saturated, but I probably don't want to drip gallons a day of full strength kalkwasser either. I'll work on getting an updated video...

New additions just arrived from FedEx! These pics do not do them justice! I'll try to get some pics of my own later this week along with some pics and video of the kalk reactor.

awesome vid. what size PVC did you use on the ats? can you give a list of the sizes/types of the fittings and diff hoses? I must have spent 2 hours in the plumbing section of home depot trying to get everything right but never could find every piece. the output on my pump isn't threaded so I'm not sure how I'll hook up a t coming off its output?

Thanks so much for the video, great job

Thanks!

Thanks, the ATS was built out of 1/2" PVC... The end is a 1/2" Cap, on the other end (feed end) I have a 1/2" slip/thread elbow. On the threaded end of that elbow I screwed in a 3/8" Tube O.D. x 1/2" MNPT Connector . The T in the return line is the same way, slip/thread with another 3/8" Tube O.D. x 1/2" MNPT Connector and a 3/8" O.D. valve inline to regulate flow. Oh, an of course 3/8" OD tubing to feed it.

Here are some links to the quick connect pieces... You can find them at home depot/lowes, but I can't find them on their site.

No prob 6speed. Glad to help. :)

Thanks ange062, just don't tell my wife. ;)

So here is what I'm doing now and planning in the future...I'm planning on switching gears and trading some of my SPS for more LPS... Colors just pop so much more on the LPS. Still going to keep some SPS, but going to be just a few select pieces which I'm hoping will be faster growers than a couple I have (in their defense they are not know to grow fast).

Started messing with my tank, here is a quick summary of what I'm doing...

Swapped the ATS for Chaeto (turf algae stopped growing and corals started to look starved, but I didn't have many fish; I think I was likely starving the tank).

Started dosing glucose (dissolved 1/4C of sugar in 1/4C of RODI water) .5mL a day.
Add 1mL of aminos (Aquavitro Fuel) a day.
Add approx 10mL of Phyto (Reef Mariculture Phyto Feast) 3 times a week.
Target feed all LPS New Life Spectrum Pellets 4 times a week (considering chopping some table shrimp instead).
Feed the fish flake 4 times a week, and Live BBS 3 times a week.

Going to up the water changes to 35% every 2 weeks (due this weekend)...

So far with all this feeding I think the sugar is doing it's job, nutrient levels appear to be in check, I still only need to clean the glass no more than once a week if that. Not sure if it is the amino's, the bi-product of the sugar,or the extra fish poop, but the corals (I think) are looking better. Thinking of switching to a BioPellet reactor, but for now this method is cheaper.

What is everyone else feeding? What kind of results are you seeing? Thinking about alternating Phyto Feast with Oyster Feast...
