Can a mantis or pistol see infra-red?

I have some night vision and am wondering if they can see the infra-red beam that it emits?

I have used them on my reef and haven't seen any reaction to the night vision yet. I just read that they see like 16 different spectrums....

I'm on the hunt for a clicker in my QT tank!!! =]

yes the mantis can

"stomatopods can also see ultra-violet and infra-red light, and some can even see polarized light" (Dr. Caldwell)

dang. Technology for teh loose!!!!

BTW: when people say multi clicks vs single clicks. How far apart are the multiples. 10-20 seconds? 5 times a second? I hear the click(more like breaking a dry branch) once every 20 or so seconds.

you can't tell mantids apart from pistols by the suppposed series of clicks. that's a myth. only real way is a visual. try the bottle trap and just leave it in there. see what you get.

mantis shrimp can see infa-red and ultraviolet. I think pistols are nearly blind, but I am not postive.

wow, sounds like the "PREDATOR"

good luck in catching it!

Yeah, I might try coating myself with mud, light a few toarches...... all while screaming RUN FOR THE CHOPPA!!!

It worked for the Governor..... might as well try ;P

:) make a video of yourself holding a small toy helicopter next to the tank and screaming "get to the choppa!"

all silliness aside though, any news on what it is?

Some stomatopods can clearly see into the far red, but what their sensitivity is to true infrared is problematic. Infrared penetrates water very poorly, so there would not be much of a signal. One exception are some shrimp that have evolved the ability to "see" in the infrared - but they just happen to live at geothermal vents.

Again, when you consider sensory capabilities of stomatopods, you have to specify the group. It appears that only the Lysiosquilloids and Gonodactyloids have color vision.

A feeding smasher will very its strikes depending on the prey. When working on a snail, they typical strike every 10-60 seconds. When attacking mobile prey such as a crab, they can deliver a few strikes in 3 or 4 seconds.
