Catalina Goby?

I was thinking about setting up a 10g for one and I was wondering:

Does anyone keep or have you kept a Catalina Goby before? any pics? Any thing that I should know/do for one?

no, people have tried them in cali with no chillers very few have been able to acclimate and even then they dont live long in there 78 degree reef

I'd guess you would absolutely, 100% need a chiller. You would want to aim for a stable temperature <72 degrees for any chance at long term success. I can't imagine it being possible to achieve that without one if your location is correct.

My location is correct. I guess I wont be able to get one any time soon. (until I can get a chiller anyways.) I appreciate all the insight/info though.

Does anyone know if there has been a thread with people keeping them with pics? I would love to see them.

They will take warmer water for a while at least, and one thing to remember is they are not long lived fish even in the wild. Public aquariums can not keep them alive for more then 2 years and 1 is the average, it seems that even in the wild they are seasonal fish and 1 to 2 years is about all they live. I have spoken to aquarists in both Steinhart and Monteray Bay Aquariums about them and that is just their lifespan. When you see them in a store they are already adults and who is to say the age of an individual, if it is 9 months old when you buy it then maybe 3 more is not a premature death. Still, I do not agree with catching them for the pet trade and a chiller with the water kept in the very low 70's as the highest temps reached would be what you would need to keep them.

well philter4 that would explain what I found out this past weekend. My LFS had a Catalina Goby. When I had asked them about it needing colder water than the rest the said that I don't believe so and they acted like they didn't even know much about it. I'm starting to wonder if they are any good for information. Should I stop buying things from them or just buy what I want after I do my research on here? (research will happen on here among other places regardless). I'm just a little upset that they would sell an animal without knowing about it.

Catalina gobies do indeed require temperate setups. Altho we don't keep that particular fish, we have run a temperate lionfish setup for well over a year at 63*F using a 1/10 hp chiller on a 25 gal tank, so yes, a chiller will indeed pull a tank down that far.
