Centrepiece Magnificas

I have been keeping a mixed reef with crispa but planning to move house in next couple of months. I'm considering moving to an anemone centrepiece tank, simpler setup without any dosing. I'm undecided on the exact anemone (keeping the crispa or replace with a magnifica or a carpet).

I know its a matter of personal taste but just for the fun of it, which ones would you guys pick out of the following magnificas:

1. Blue tipped, brown tentacles
2. Yellow tipped, green tentacles
3. Green tipped, purple tentacles

I personally prefer the green or yellow tipped with purple tentacle morphs, especially with a bright foot. I also like the yellow tipped with green tentacle morph too, and in distant third would be the blue or white tipped with brown or mauve tentacles. It just looks too much like a torch coral to me.

All that said, there are many mags that are nice, but simply don't have eye popping color, especially if they have a tan or light yellow foot. All of the morphs mentioned need to be very brightly colored, as most mags are somewhat drab in appearance, even the green tip purple ones.

My centerpiece.

That's currently going thru treatment

I have yellow tipped with a reddish/browninsh base morph and then I have purple based with more whitish tips morph. The yellow tips are definitely more eye catching as the yellow is very bright. So I would say if you could get a yellow tipped, regardless of base color, you would have a nice centerpiece. The truth is, any large magnifica is eye-catching.

My favorite is a purple base, green disc and tentacles and then purple tips. They are near impossible to find though.

I like the crispa in my mixed reef but with its brownish green shade, I felt that it will be too drab to be a stand alone centrepiece.

I will definitely look out for a morph with a brighter color. I agree with D-Nak that some of the magnificas do look a bit like torch corals..

Carpet anemones seem to be a solid alternative as well, but I'm wary of their fish/invert eating reputation.

My mag is definitely mostly purple/lavender with lighter tips, but they are starting to get yellow. Even when the tips were light/white-ish the structure of it and the way my ocellaris interacted with it was incredible. I have some fancy BTAs too, but nothing compares to the magnifica.

Kinetic, love your tank - its so clean and crisp. What makes the magnifica stands out for against the fancy BTAs, the more abundant tentacles?

They are truly magnificent.

Til they get that Edvard Munch scream face. Then you know the futility. Mercy.

The overall shape of it, and the fact that it's not lodged deep inside a crevice, but stands up on a rock.

Beautiful mag!

I saw a slight bleached nem at the LFS but cant quite tell whether its a magnifica or gigantea. Is there a strong identifier between the two?

I will try to get a pic next visit.

How do mags get along with bta's? Is flow critical? BTA are not flow people ky

My Mag was walking around for awhile before, and the BTAs I have quickly got out of its way. Nothing bad otherwise. The BTAs stay pretty far down the rockwork (PAR at 180 and 220 on my two BTAs, yep, I tested it). My Mag gets 450 - 480 PAR. Flow wise, the BTAs seem to be a little less bubbled when in higher flow, but don't seem to hate it.

Hope that helps.

Naka, wil you chop that in half? Just kidding, where is a good source to troll for colored mags? Doing a new build should be ready in a few months and want to start off with a centerpiece mag on an island

Main difference is that they don't resemble eachother in any way.

That is both hilarious and very true.

No disrespect, but photos alone show extreme differences. Overall color, tentacle size and shape, and posture are very different. For example, gigs live within the rocks while mags live on top.
