Chalice Placement

When someone purchases a Chalice frag and they want it to grow out to be a specimen colony in their tank, where do they usually place it? Will a Chalice coral grow out on the sand bed or does it need a rock to encrust on? Thanks.

Either, but if you put it on a rock don't plan to ever get it off. People say they grow slow but they really seem to take off in my tank especially after half dollar size.

On a rock is the easiest place to grow them quickly for me. I leave some on the sand because I know I want to frag them later, but if I'm not interested in fragging I put them on a rock.

Agree with the others... it all depends on what you want. If you want to continuously frag it, sand bed is a good idea. But if you want it to be a natural looking piece, attach it to your rock. You'll still have to prune it from time to time, and it will be a pain, but it will look more natural. Not many corals in nature grow loose on the sand... or on eggcrate.
