Changing of the Guard

Reef Bass

Greetings Northcoast Reefers.

My first act as your new president is to thank Jake and Bob for their service. Thank you gentlemen! Your efforts were appreciated.

Personally, I am excited about the club and its future. With nice weather finally arriving, I'm hoping we can have some meetings as summer bbqs at members' houses. I'd also like to organize a tank tour so everyone can show off their tanks. If you are willing to host a meeting and / or be a stop on a tank tour, please let me know.

If anyone knows interesting people in the reef industry that might consider speaking at a meeting, please bring them to my attention and I'll see if I can arrange a visit.

I also welcome ideas and suggestions from y'all about how to make the meetings more fun or how to improve our club. Please post them right here. If you aren't comfortable posting them here, feel free to PM me with your ideas.

One suggestion I have is to see if some members with expertise in certain areas would be willing to speak or do a demo at a meeting. We've recently had excellent demos / talks from James with his QT procedures and from Jake with his fragging demo. Please forgive me if I volunteer you for something, I'm just trying to provide hypothetical examples. Steve Ruddy and I could talk about taking tank photos. Jake could speak about the challenges of maintaining multple tanks / water systems. Perhaps Tom could give us some insight on the keys to his success keeping a reef tank for 20 years! Mike and Jeff could speak about their experiences with breaking down and moving tanks! ;)

Another idea would be to have a "current challenges" discussion during the meeting where members could bring up issues they are having and the club could offer suggestions on how to handle them.

Other areas I think we could improve on are meeting attendance and member participation in the raffle and frag swaps. Attendance at the last meeting was sparse and as such many people missed out on the very nice raffle pieces which included a LE Sunset Monti and several ORA corals. Remember, it's your participation in the raffle which allows us to continue to purchase awesome raffle stock. We also welcome donations of quality pieces by members.

Let's make our club an informative and fun venue for sharing our love of reefs and our vast pool of combined knowledge and experience!

All hale the King. Sounds like you have a kick *** plan to me Ken. I think I could be on the tank tour. Maybe even a bbq.

Ken,

Sounds great. We are definitely willing to host meetings. I hope you enjoy your presidency and thanks to Jake and Bob as well.

Ken,

Well Said, I will definately host a meeting with BBQ at my house. I'm not sure whether I can do June. I'll let you know.

I think it would be also great to hear some member feed back on what changes if any they would appreciate. I agree with the lack of participation in the swap. It's been very weak for about the last year. I've asked the question before. Why aren't you participating in the swap.

It's a real simple concept for any club. "If everyone does a little no one has to do a lot" So please each and everyone of you make an effort to give back to a club that I'm sure has given to you.

Congrats and thanks Ken.

Thanks guys. Your willingness to participate is one of the many reasons why our club rocks so hard.

Stay tuned for postings about the June meeting.

Ken,

Your knowledge in this hobby is amazing and your photography skills are very impressive so I'm excited to learn a lot more in the months to come thanks to you and everyone in the club...I'm going to do a thread soon of my tank set ups before I started the club and then when I got onto it and then now...I still have a lot to learn but my learning curve is more like a 90 degree angle.....I didn't even know what drip acclimating was until 3 months ago when I started. =) Then I also noticed that in the last three months I have spent more money and time on fish stuff than I have in the last 4 years.

Looking forward to many good months of reefing!

Guys, how would you like to have a booth at BAYMAC June 13th in San Jose to sell frags to raise money for the club? We'll have Frank Burr, Jake Adams, Scott Fellman and Rich Ross as guest speakers, several other clubs selling frags and a handful of other private frag vendors. We have a large raffle and all the proceeds are split amongst the clubs that take part. best part is, it's a free booth for you and the event itself is free admission. Last year I know BAR walked away with an extra $1500 they were not expecting to bank. It's a great way to help build both exposure for the club and money for such things as bringing in guest speakers :) if this sounds good to you if Ken could email (use the email link in my profile) I'll work out the details :)

Got you guys on the Floor plan now...lucky booth #13 :)

I'll be updating the announcement threads shortly with raffle prizes thus far as well as who all is going to be there. I've got a half dozen companies/fraggers coming up from LA (Fantasy Corals, Wet Thumb Frags, Mobile Aquatics, JenDub, Warner Marine, Socal Tropical Fish and EcoSystem Aquariums so far). 5 clubs have signed up and hopefully the sixth will do so Friday night.
