Cheap place to buy fish ??

Just a curious question - Does anyone know of any divers that I can get fish at discounted rates from ? I'm thinking that if I can get fish directly from the source by eliminating the middlemen I can get a much better deal. Currently just looking for Achilles/bandit Angelfish/crosshatch trigger. :hmm5:

Honestly after shipping and possible death it's probably better to just go to the store and buy what you see. Not many divers will deal with you direct anyways since your not going to give them enough business. I just finished underwater worlds website (in bensenville) and have purchased allot of fish there recently. All healthy. I even got a golden angel and he's doing great. https://underwaterworldz.com

You can also try seven seas aquatics. He claims that no one will beat his prices.

Mods if the link is not allowed please remove but I figured it's ok since its a lfs

I don't buy fish based on price anymore due to questionable netting practices and long term health issues. I love divers den, you pay, but you get healthy specimens that are responsibly caught.

I agree with dom418. Divers den is the best place to buy fish. I gambled with the golden angel and got lucky for now. I still don't expect it to live as long as a properly collected net caught fish.

I just recently found out about underwaterworldz. They seem to have a good price compared to other LFS. I picked up an emperor from them last week.

True - I've looked at DD and to me it seems like i'm paying 2-3x more than the LFS so it kinda defeats the purpose. I guess it makes sense if money is not an objective but to me its prices are outrageous.

Considering the time and expense involved in the capture, shipment, and upkeep of all fish I'm surprised prices aren't higher if anything

the hobby isnt as popular as it used be. quieted down over the past 5yrs

I look for a fish thats eating infront of me or foraging through rocks. Prices dont mean anything to me. Ive seen $75 yellow tangs thats plastered with ich and all sorts of fungi.

Support your local stores or they may never be there, plus they will treat you good in the long term

^^^this.
There's a diver in Hawaii that was willing to do an order for a local club. It's not something most divers will do, as if their customers find out that they're dealing correct with the consumer, they won't be selling wholesale much longer.
Expense, having to go to the airport and dead loss made the deal a flop in the long run.
Go with a LFS that you like, and help them stay in business so they'll be there when you need them.

Its not that I don't buy stuff at the LFS - I do/did spend a pretty penny at all the local stores close by. I wish the markup wouldn't be so high.

After extensive searching - I did find one diver willing to sell me the big ticket fish that i'm looking for (Bandit/crosshatch/achilles) at very good prices. Looks like shipping will be the killer and I have to find the time to get to the airport to pick em up :thumbdown

I think I'll just get the bandit and achilles as the prices are pretty low. Hopefully it won't be money down the drain. And it if is, oh well an expensive lesson learnt :headwally:

seven seas will be opening retail location soon in mt prospect i believe fabio best person i have dealt with so far great pricing

Wow great to hear new shops opening. I am amazed there are already so many shops - except for people I have met through the local forums, I dont know anyone who has a tank.

hmm, not sure if this is against the rules of the forum but is anyone willing to take the chance and get some fish at super cheap prices ? I'm just looking to split the shipping costs. The prices are at least 50-75% cheaper than at stores.

You should check A Aquatic in Northbrook. The owner is really nice and give good price with discount. The store is not big but good selection to buy it.

Bump to see if anyone else wants to join in. I'm planning on setting up an order from Hawaii. Achilles, bandit angel, moorish idols, yellow tang, long nose butterflies. Hopefully I'll finalize it next week
