Chevron Tang Question

Hey guys, just a few quick questions about Chevron Tangs.

I'm debating adding a Chevron Tang to my new tank here in the next few months.

The tank is brand new, adding water and rock starting next week.

The tank is 120x29x31" ~ 470 gallons with a 180 gallon sump.

I'm putting in 500 lbs of Marco Rock that has been curing at a macro farm for 4-5 months (little color and pods now).

After the initial cycle, I'm going to add two cardinals to make sure everything is OK.

Next I'll setup two QT tanks (maybe 3 if I get a Chevron) for Black and Purple Tangs. I have an existing Yellow Tang and want all 3 to go in together. Also moving over a Black Ice Clown and Yellow Bellied Blue Tang.

The Zeb. Tangs are pretty tough, so I'm not too worried about them going into a not super established tank.

How would a Chevron do going into a tank 2 months or so after the cycle has completed?

What can I do to help it out? Just make sure there is a ton of nori in there to supplement the lack of algae in the tank?

Tang wise I'll have the Yellow, Purple, Black, Yellow Bellied Blue in with the Chevron. With Achilles, Achilles Hybrid (maybe) and Sohal going in towards in the end of stocking together and when the tank is much more established.

Should the Chevron be OK with this mix of tangs?

Other fish will be a Crosshatch Trigger pair (near last) and smaller fish like clowns, dwarf angels, wrasses, etc... for color / movement / tank duties.

Not really planning on going nuts with fish... mixed reef setup...

The chevron should be fine two months after the cycle is complete to add. If you have a established tank now you could use some sand from that system to kick start the new DT to help the tank cycle and grow more good bacteria and micro fauna.

Yeah have a tank with some very old rock (actually from another reefer) and the sand is pretty full of stuff

I wasn't going to use any of the rock from my old tank though... had some trash polyps pop up and I don't want any of that near the new tank...

Not a bad idea to use some of the sand though... might just get some from the macro farmer though

Do you think the Chevron will be OK with the other tangs? Not sure how their temperament is...

I was with you until this point! Sohal is a mean SOB, and not sure two Achilles (essentially) will play well together frankly.

Yeah sort of the two fish I even got this big of a tank for...

I thought I'd have a shot with 10 feet of swimming space. Would go VERY small on the Sohal ~ 2"...

Kind of wanted to put all three in at the same time and hope they figured their stuff out. Not even sure about the Achilles Hybrid, will depend on the availability and how I feel the stocking is at the time.

If it's getting crowded, I'm not going to get the Hybrid...

First of all, Chevrons are more detritivorous than they are herbivorous. I would just make sure you add it before the Achilles or at the same time. Personally, I would never keep a Sohal tang in any size tank after my experiences with how mean they are.

My own personal experience with the Sohal is that it is OK when small, but once it reaches 8" plus - watch out! And at that point, it becomes hard to find another home for it.

I have had good success with keep a gaggle of tangs in my tank and avoiding aggressive issues. When you have just a few they tend to bicker.

I currently have 9 yellows, a purple, an atlantic blue, 2 blues and a chevron. There is no fighting. I plan on adding some more purples and an Achilles.

Sohal is a totally different fish. I have kept them before and sometimes they get big and just decide they need to be the crazy boss fish. Each fish is different, but Sohals and clown tangs, in my history turn out to be butt kicking fish when they get big, and they will beat the crap out of anything swimming in the same tank.

Chevrons (squishy is his name) are one of the most underrated tangs in this hobby, we have had one in our system since day 9 of the tank getting water in it (did zeo 10 days cycle)--- amazing fish, we also have a black (papa midnight from Constantine and a achilles hybrid ( Archy formally know as spock) and the chevron is the boss of the tank. IMO the chevron is a VERY hardy tang, does work on algae and is beautiful

I know nothing of sohals besides what ever ones says which is MEAN DONT DO IT lol
so cant help out there but do a chevron

As for the Sohal... it's a LONG way off stocking wise. I guess I'll see how I feel about the system when it's time to add one.

If I do get one... I guess I'll need to have a backup plan as to what to do with it, if it gets mean...

Beautiful fish, can be extremely mean, even if your aquarium is the ocean.

+1. Everything that's coming in should be quarantined, regardless of the source. Not doing it is hitting future you in the nuts.

No, cardinals will go into QT first

They will be the first to go into the DT after QT though.

Then I'll start to QT the Black and Purple if the Cardinals seem happy in the DT.

Just don't want to jump the gun and start QTing a Black and Purple if there could be issues.

EVERYTHING that goes in the tank will be QT'ed... maybe not some of the CUC lol
