Chillers: JBJ Arctica or Prime Tower Chiller by Current

Okay guys, didn't think I would need a chiller but looks like its going to be required. :hmm2:

I have great deals on both the JBJ Arctica 1/4 HP and a 1/4 HP Prime Tower Chiller by Current.

I have done some research on both but thought I would take it to the streets. My system has approximately 160 gallons total volume. I will be looking to reduce the temperature about 10-12 degrees in the Summer. Noice will be a factor as this is in my main living room and will not be in the stand due to ventilation requirements.

Whats your recomendations based on the above factors?? :fun5:

Thanks ahead of time!

I have had the 1/15 1/10th and currently have the 1/5th hp chiller from JBJ. Never had an issue and jbj are very quiet. Only reason I went through so many is I upgraded a few times.

Thanks for the feedback HV. Do you think it would service a tank of 160 gallons running approximately 400 watts of lighting (T5's), 700 watts of circulation pump (2 Iwaki's)? I would only need it to pull down about 10-12 degrees though.

Your thoughts??

Are you set on JBJ or Current? I had a 1/5th jbj and it worked well on my 90. When it did come on you did notice it but not terrible. It sounded like a refrigerator. That said, my dad has a TECO and it's much quieter and IMO much nicer than the JBJ.

I agree-I have used a JBJ but now use a Teco, I like the Teco over the JBJ. You can add a heater and UV,has a "quiet" mode, and requires less flow(= smaller pump)

MM haven't heard of TECO but sounds like it would be a dream to run. I am considering the JBJ or the Prime because they are being offered to me for $200 a pop!

The noise factor probably wouldn't be a large concern because it woudl be overshadowed by my tank which sounds like a refrigeration at present. The efficiency and ability to cool that amount fo water volume by 10-12 degrees is what is most important.:eek1:

My jbj 1/4 hp is almost silent.

It will keep your tank cool just fine. I use mine on 500g with about 2000w of lighting. It doesnt cool my system but will keep it from rising. I rarely need A chiller and I got it for a killer price.

Right now my chiller is sitting in front of the tank in the living room. When I get around to it its going in the crawl space under the tank.
