Chinese LED Lights

First, I wanted to say thanks to everyone contributing to this thread. There has been so much good information posted for us that are trying to get a handle on leds.

I just ordered 2 LEDs through Shenzhen Gehl Lamps (not the new lights.) I ordered 2 of the older style (D120 style) with additional moonlights. I worked with Brian Sun as well. He was incredible in helping me get my lights exactly how I want them. He really knows his product, and his english is actually very good considering. So far so good, he said I should have them most likely by the end of next week. If the lights come as expected I would highly recommend working with Brian. I'll make sure to post some impressions once I get them in hand.

Here is my layout, do you think it will look ok? Moonlights are not shown they are 450 blue. If you see any major mistakes I may still be able to change it around. Thanks!

How did those 3 different whites work out for you?? i'd like to know so i can either get something like that or just do all whites @ 75k. thanks

I saw this ratio posted in one of the 105 pages a few weeks ago, (lol) but now I cant find it. Anyways, i'm interested in this ratio but, Ive read many different things on the different color whites. Cool Whites, Neutral whites and Warm Whites. Can you guys please help me decide what would be the best??

Also, channel-wise, should I get the Violets to turn on with the Royal Blues? or should I just have whites alone? and colors on a separate channels?

your advise would be highly appreciated.

Thanks guys!:beer::fish1:

FYI: Red, Green and Blue will give you a combined "White" light if on the same "blue" channel which defeats the purpose of two separate channels to change your Look. I if you like to see your corals under the all blue look you will not have that capability. And, yes Violets are fine on the blue channel.

I'm confused, wont the blue over power the greens and reds? what do you mean it will give me a combined "white"?

It is the way light works. Red, Green and Blue light combines together to make white light. Light does not mix the way paint does. If you've ever noticed stage lights at a play you might remember all the red, green and blue lights. They controll the temperature of the stage that way and can have colors stand out more. It is also the way monitors and tvs work. I hope my little light physics lesson was helpful and not insulting. Just trying to help you understand what he means.

no offense taken at all, but now that you mentioned it, it does make sense.
So in your opinion, what colors should I set per channel?

EZTimes is correct that one channel should be all blue. That is what I just ordered. He is right that a few violets couldn't hurt and wouldn't be noticed much and might give a little more pop if you have something that needs those extra NMs it offers. I'd be careful not to add very many on that channel as it might make a purple hue and not the blue hue everyone seems to try and achieve. I personaly am not doing that. If all blue at night is too blue then I can always use small percentages of the other channel to tone it down some.

As for the other channel I'm going with Reefbreeders default option. I was worried about it till I talked with Logan on the phone today. I was going to remove a couple of reds but he already did it. They thought the original was too pink as well so they edited their default layout to fix it. (At least on the Photon 16's I've ordered). I can solder so if I don't love it when I get it I can always order LEDs in and change a few out. I'm sure it is pretty good for the most part.

You have a photo of your layout I can compare?

And what about the different whites?

i was confused for months..then just went with the default current layout over at RB. I wanted to add in some greens but logan suggested that might just be a waste of time as there is a good amount of green in the neutral whites.. now i get it.. i was thinking of this like paint....

These have three Violets two greens and two reds and three blue moonlights.

When i ordered these a few months ago, I never even looked @ this forum. lol so I was pretty nervous, but i'm pretty confident now on the ordering, I just want to get the best color ratio possible. I have these on my current tank now, but some buddies of mine want some so I figured the new batch i grab i would make them more of a full spectrum, thats why I was asking on the different whites.

They make my tank look amazing and the corals open like ive never believed.

I just placed the order today so I don't have anything to take a pic of. Sorry. If you want to see the current layout of the reefbreeders photon 16's just go to that page and at the bottom is a link to an excel spreadsheet showing their new layout.

BTW the pics of your tank look amazing!

Glad I could be of help. Sometimes I'm not just blowing smoke:D Anyway it is a very comon mistake. If you want to have fun with your friends bet them what happens mixing red and green. Then after they come up with some kind of ugly gray color shine them with a flashlight and some celophane on a wall and you'll get yellow. It'll blow their minds :crazy1:

Here is pic of how light mixes if anyone is intersted:

haven't had chance to read through all the pages here. but quickly any difference between brand names with this 120w unit? I see different brand names for what look like an identical unit.
evergrow, greengrow or GS brand?
thx

As you will see reading through tons of notes on these threads there are a number of Chinese companies that make D120 / IT / Photon type fixture. Most look alike because they get their cases from the same supplier in China and very few label their fixtures and some like EverGrow have an identifying EGxxxxxxxxxx serial number sticker. And since EverGrow makes Photons' for Reef Breeders they are identical at this time and should have the same serial number stickers. There are some comments about the quality inside the cases on Reef Central from those that have tested other manufactures but EverGrow comes out on top.

So in your opinion with Evergrow and ReefBreeders being the same, would you say that there is any advantage to getting ReefBreeders if it's only the value or Photon series fixtures one is purchasing?

I just went with them. RB is at least an American company you can call if you have issues with the fixture. Also, unless logan at RB cut me a speacial deal, the price on the site was inclusive of freight. I purchased 3 units though so that might have been his discount he gave me for buying 3. Also, he has photon 16's in stock and ready to ship. Mine are supposed to ship Monday! I'm very excited!!!

I have had my 32 inch photon for 4 months and I have to say it was the best purchase I have done considering I spent a lot more for halides fixtures. My corals are growing and doing great and my tank is half Lps and half sps and nothing had been bleached.. I don't go over 60% on the lights and I have them hanging 8inches above water..

Quick question knowing that RGB makes white has someone made a fixture with three channels one red, one green, one blue and then a program that adjusts each level to get the color wanted?

Is there a perfect distance these should be mounted from the tank? I'm working on a light rack and just wondering how tall to make it. Thanks!
