Chinese LED Lights

hello all, i am after some help with the lighting choice for an evergrow 2080.

im currently talking to them on there website and they have asked me what colors to choose, from reds to greens to uv's and so on.

basically i have no idea when it comes to colour choice and would like some help from the people in this thread as some of you seem to completely understand it all.

does anyone have a color chart they could post up.

my tank is 4f long 70 gallon, is a mix of fish and corals.

are UV any good, do they help with algae and so on or more of a gimmick and better of with a proper uv light filter?

cheers
ricky.

I have order a 2080 with layout in page 41. I have not receive it so can't tell you how that turn out. UV does not emit a lot of light but it does produce UV light (not sure if its A or B). I have UV in my nano and I can tell the purple and green is exceptional. I have another side of my nano only use blue an white. The result is very different.

I think your light will be very blue. The UV doesn't give out a lot of light. The red is very "red". If your white channel does not up above 70%, your red will make the take a bit close to purple. I have a 2040 with 2 reds. I have more white than you but I still find the red a bit over powering. Again, its personal perference. The bottom line is the coral is doing good. I do found the UV seems enhancing a lot of purple and green growth in my case.

i think you'll be right about a 14-16k look. i agree, UV doesn't produce much light at all, really. i like what my reds and UV produce from my coral. i wish we could test on their own channel but in comparison to another unit i have, i can tell the UV and reds make a difference in the shots i've taken of them much like you describe.

How many reds and greens? you think 2 of each is enough? And should the reds and greens go on the blue channel or half on blue channel half on white?

I have the same layout like yours and also interested modding my d120. Did anyone reply to your question?

Thx.

if you order your fixture through them the extra LEDs are only $1.50 each and ship in the same box so free shipping. but i guess it doesn't sound like you'll picking up a light through them?

I already have the D120. Had it since July. I just want to add Red , green and a few more different whites.

It doesn't matter what channel you run them on its all up to what you want and can do without. some say they are overpowering and some don't. I would/will be putting them on my white channel when I can order some tey are so powerful as is I can stand to lose a few

got my new LED lights today. these are the evergrow D120s "chinese lights" ordered from a GB with my local reef club.

everything was really well packaged nice and tight!

they got my custom LED spectrum and layout design perfect, too!

even with all my blues, with both @ 100% this still isn't a 20k look. more like a 14k look, crazy how just a few whites can overtake the look. by dimming them down, and keeping the blues at 100% i'm able to achieve the look i was hoping for.

with both @ 100% and the lights six inches above the water line, at 18" depth i'm getting ~330 PAR on the edges of my 40 breeder tank. pretty ridiculous especially considering that the true PAR is probably higher due to these being LEDs and the apogee sensor not picking up the actinics correctly.

good stuff so far!

this is the custom layout i put together that i sent them in case someone wants a solid place to start from.

What is the voltage for the 3w led? The seller stated 3.5 - 4V.
Thx.

this is the final choice ive decided to go with

my tank is only 12" tall so ill be hanging my led about 10" above the tank
cant wait, i really like a 20k look so hopefully this will give me that look.

I'll update once i get it in. cant wait. I'm moving from an ati sunpower as i got tired of having to change bulbs every year

any chance you could give me a recommendation as to what i should use for a fish/coral setup in a standard 4 foot tank with uv LED's please? i would get the combo you ordered but what should i swap out for the uv?

led lights are new to me and im just getting back into this after an 8 year break so im out of touch with it all to be honest.

What kind of corals are you keeping? SPS/LPS/Soft? Combination? Fish doesn't care as long as your color combination does make a blue tang turned into a purple tang :)

I restarted my tank after 9 years since last year. Went through the same thing you did last year. This is my second set of LED because my first one (blue and white only) doesn't really do the job. The LED technology jump very fast compare to the MH and T5. One year make a whole lot of different. Because they are all digital, so many new feature coming out every 6 months. A set used to be 1000's because hundreds. I wouldn't surprised they soon to be in the lower 100's even for barnd name. I just don't feel the lead to spend 1000's when you can get similar output from 100's. The light will be replaced by more fancy/function/power in 6-12 months anyway. Therefore, my therory is to try different combination and if it doesn't pane out well, I still have a few hundreds to get another one ext year.

With the color combination, I would suggest to combin the different color of blues from 440-460. The put the color in the white channel. I would go no more than 4 for each color , ie, red, green, orange. I would cluster the color in a close group so the would blend together.

I am not sure if the 2080 can cover a 4 ft tank with 90degree optics. Unless you keeping night colar at the two ends.

Hope that help.

the guy from reef breeders said his standard layout is produces 14k. can anyone confirm this or have a pic over a tank? I would like a 18k look

from what i've read and seen in the lights i got, i find this to be incorrect.

i did almost 3.5x blues to white based on hazard's suggestion for a 20k look and even still with both at 100% the color isn't as "blue" as 20k radium. i'd say closer to a 14k look. you can reference my color chart and layout from a few posts away for which whites i went with. good luck!

Good feedback. I need this kind of info as I'm doing a group buy for our local club and buying 15+ fixtures and the other guys are asking me about colors and overall look.

Thanks.

Travis,

When your lights are all dialed up to 100%, what color would you say you have in terms of color temp by MH standards? Are they 14K light blue or 17K somewhere between 14K and 20K, or are they all the way up at 20K MH blue? I really appreciate any info you can share. I'm working on my color layout for both a D120 and a pair of IT2080s. Thanks.

Monkiboy or those who have sent in custom configurations, did you have any complications with dealing with the company? Also what is the price range for custom fixtures?

Hay Travis, Did you decide to go with 90 degree optics? I would like to swap out a few leds and add 2- green and 2-660nm reds and 2-400nm to my current D120's but am afraid i would get a spotlight effect from those colors. Any opinions?
