Chinese LED Lights

Most Chinese companies I see on Alibaba are distributors who are not very interested in single retail sales, although many will sell small quantities or sometimes singles and/or send samples for testing. I have contacted a few for group buys in the past with good responses from the sellers (about 50% off in quantity). So if you have 5 or 10 people or more you usually can work out a good deal, but you have to work out quantity shipping and also beware of US Customs. If you have a large order you are more likely to raise an eyebrow when your shipment goes through customs.

I order things from AliExpress. Shipping often is free. My LED light arrived from Hong Kong with free FedEX International Economy shipping in just 10 days. The seller was happy to answer questions both in live chat and via the AliExpress messaging system. While browsing AliExpress I have seen some companies that will customize lights if you ask ahead of time. If you don't ask, they ship the "default" configuration.

Here is what I am using on my 37/40H.

Fit and finish are very good, and the spectrum looks good to my eye although I don't have a PAR meter. So far my long tentacle anemone and rock flower anemones like it, but only time will tell.

Thanks Jax, I was looking for a single unit so ended up buying from a US distributer. If I'm ever looking for a larger quantity then Alibaba would be worth the extra effort to buy from them.

Link please?

I don't need that much light, but others may.

I just ordered this pair from Ali Express $226 and free shipping.

Only time will tell if they're any good. I'm currently running a 48" 4-bulb ATI plus a 36W DIY Blue/Royal Blue stunner strip. I have no issue with my current lighting except for the cost of bulb replacement.

As the test continues to compare the d120 to the aquamana , one week is not much change, however, left side has less algea on glass and corals react faster when lights come on..

I also ended up buying the d2120 from them. They sell the Evergrow brand lights which are, from everything I've read, replaceable leds and optics. I was going to go with an outfit that offered custom layouts and optics but found they were all either literally twice the price for a customized Evergrow (I paid $108 for the 2014 model) or a brand I didn't want.

EverGrow sells direct and through a distributor, us. They also make fixtures that are sold by OceanRevive, ReefBreeders and Reef Radiance. The leds are replaceable and in most cases, tampering with the seals is NOT a warranty voiding offence. Dropping the fixture in the water is though. And more than a few people have asked for warranty replacement after dropping the fixture in the water. :headwally:

What do you guys think about these?

The light you linked. It's only 75W, only 2 colors, and for that price?
Please don't tell me you think you got a good deal?

FWIW- one can get a 120-165W, full spectrum(multiple colors), high PAR led with dimmers, shipped to their door, for right about $100.

FWIW

Ah yes, I have seen these, and about everything else on AliExpress. I also looked at the ReefBar Pro and other bar lights. I was concerned that the ReefBar Pro seemed so narrow. How on Earth could that be a big enough heat sink to avoid frying my forearm when I hit it reaching behind the tank?

Anyway, I read this thread and another (wasn't this thread split at one point) for three months before I made my decision. No, the 36" light I bought isn't the cheapest or the most powerful, and yes it uses only royal blue and neutral white LEDs 50/50.

You have to start with your limitations first. My big one is that I can't have LED lights hanging from my ceiling in my tiny, tiny apartment. That's just not acceptable. I thought about building or having made some "J" or "L" brackets to attach to the back of the stand to hang a light that way, and I way eventually may do that, but it would require moving furniture and possibly draining the tank fully to get behind it. So that leaves bar and strip lights for me. I also hate, hate, hate fans that make noise in my tiny living room 3 feet from the TV and which always seem to require blowing the dust off constantly.

I really do like this particular light. It's extremely well built. It arrived in 10 days protected with plywood sheets in the box and foam. It has glass to protect the LEDs and it is sealed well against moisture and salt. That's important to me since it sits 2" above the water. It has excellent color rendering, which is pleasing to my eye, but not quite so useful for PAR from what I read. The blue looks great with a nice violet hue and my rock flower anemone fluoresces brighter under the blue lights every day. It has a great shimmer. It grown no undesireable algae. So far so good. If I want it dimmable, I can swap the drivers, but I feel no need. My MH was never dimmable, and after 20 years of that I feel no need to dim these. I'm used to blocking some light to protect new introductions. I don't keep any corals and don't intend to.

I thought about getting my same light with three rows of LEDs instead of two, but I think this one is adequate. It's not quite as bright as my 175 MH was, but I always considered it overkill on a 37/40H. I also see no point in buying a light that is more than I need and then dimming it. I see so many people running at 60% or so.

My experiment is using a long tentacle anemone buried down in the sand and a rock flower anemone half way up the rocks. So far so good. The long tentacle was 4" under standard lighting at the LFS and now he is spreading to 9" according to my ruler. If these two guys do well, after a few months I'll try a bubble tip and a maxi-mini. If not, I'll try another light and sell this to someone with a fish only tank or a ciclid tank. If I do this again, it most likely will be a DIY build. There is plenty of info on that and I definitely can do the build with ease. It will just take more time than I have at this moment, especially with the holidays.

Speaking of which, HAPPY THANKSGIVING everyone! Don't feed your fish the turkey scraps. It's not good for them I heard. :lmao:

Now if I could just convince my new Clarkii clown that my long lentacle really is a suitable home. He keeps looking at it. Right now my flame angel is too busy sticking his head in it to steal little bits of food. :hmm2:

Gotta go clean the skimmer now. Oh joy.

I'm curious as to what you think of the Aquamana 165w cob so far. I've got a Tao Tronics 120 right now and not to impressed with it after 1 1/2 years. I had a 150w metal halide but wanted to get away from the heat, I went with the Tao Tronics. I've been researching the Aquamana for a couple of weeks now. I saw this thread and wanted someone else's opinion.

Got my LCD artic in today. First impressions are that its very sleek and clean. The timer was mildy easy to set. Light looks very pleasing to the eye. No purple hue at all as seen in some led pictures. I will have to get the dslr our later for pics, the iphone gets all blue. Only tiny aspect to point out is the discoing green leds; however, the light is only about 6 inches above my nano.

Well maybe 3, the artic units are 16 inches in length, so you actually would only be able to fit 3 in a row if you choose that fixture

Sorry 34" tall. So 50 wide, 24 deep and 34 tall.

You think 4?

If you have easy to keep corals 2 will be more than enough and the standard 90 degree lens will still give you plenty of PAR at the bottom. If you have corals that demand higher light intensity, you might be better off with 3, but I would start with 2 and see how it goes. Shipping is free so there is no advantage to buying 3 at one time. When was the last time a manufacturer told you to buy less?

Each S026 and T247 will cover about a 30" wide by 24" front to back footprint when hung 8-12" off the water over a 24" deep tank. Hanging it higher or over a deeper tank, the footprint gets bigger and the PAR at the bottom goes down slightly so you need to turn up the power a bit to compensate.

Regard,
Stan
