ChrisQ's Upgrade Build....Again

For what it's worth, I have a 40 breeder as my sump, drilled on the side with an external pump. It serves as the fuge, skimmer chamber and return chamber for a 187 gallon tank.

40BR makes a great sump, and if it's a 5ft 150 you'll have plenty of room for equipment. I also have a 40 as a sump, it's tight but my tank is only a little longer than 4ft.

Well after a long day and two trips back and forth I finally got the new tank home. Tank is in great shape just really dirty from the move, I'll clean it out later this week.

Now to the stand, we had to take some of it apart in order to get the tank off of it... Now that I'm home and looking at the stand it's not really finished in a way that I would have done it. BUT the stand seems pretty well build and possibly a little overkill but nothing wrong with that at all. My question to a all of you is; should I keep the stand the way it is, strip off the paint and try to refinish it OR take a big loss and toss the stand and spend more money building a new one?

Yes it will, I already sold the 20g and now I need to figure out what to do with the 80g. I have plenty of people interested but I don't have a price yet so they are all waiting for me. I may have to drain the 80 move it out of the way and place it somewhere else in the house until I get the 150 up and running.

Side note got some things done on the stand. Skinned all the sides (I didn't skin the back to let heat try to escape) also made a small compartment on the left to mount all my controllers instead of having them on the outside.

Still need to do the bottom pannel where the sump will sit, the doors and once I get the tank up on the stand I'll decide what I want to do for the trim which means I'll have to stain first I guess.

While I'm out of town in vacation, I put my order in for my sump to be built and it will hopefully be done by next weekend but I think he is busy so maybe later, doesn't matter though because I'm not quite at that point for the build yet. When I get back I want to finish the front doors, figure out how to do my trim and start prepping for stain. I hope to be ready for staining by Christmas so I have something to do. I'm also going crazy trying to figure out what my equipment will be. All I know is my skimmer will be the skimz monzter 201. Return pump I'm thinking between jebao and waveline and maybe vortech if I can find a good enough deal to make it worth it in my mind.

I have a friend that went from the jebao to vortech and he's pretty happy with it.

Got all of my doors installed and lined up. Placed an order for my sump which will hopefully be done by the end of the week. Placed an order for my return pump which may get here next week. Still need to do the final trim on the tank, cut a hole for my drains, stain, put tank on the stand and start moving and breaking down the old tank.

Now the nightmare of a battle to decide which skimmer to get for this tank....

Ok things seem to be moving a long now, I did most of the trim, need to stain and put the tank on the stand to finish the trim though. I just finished applying the first coat of paint for the sump area and going to apply a second coat in an hr or so. I was able to pick up 150lbs of dry rock today. I have 120lbs of sand I was able to get a good deal on, also got a skimmer for the tank, I got a used reef octopus at a good price and I'll just use that until it dies or I save up for a higher end skimmer. Still need to do a good amount of work but things are moving along nicely so I'm pretty excited to get this up and running! I'll try to get pictures up in a little bit to show the small progress of the stand.

Let's see some pics! :)

Let me know if you need a gate valve for the skimmer. I have one you can have if it'll fit.

Thanks Marvin but I'm good on the gate valve. I have the skimmer running in a vinegar bath right now. I'll get the pics up soon!

I took the doors off to paint the inside of the stand. I also used a router to round the edges of the top molding and added the corner trim.

I also heard back about my sump. A bit of progress has been made, should be finished tomorrow or Tuesday and ready to be pick up around Thursday.
