cl2ysta1 and dew2loud1's 900g Starphire in the desert

That's beautiful. I'm a bit jealous. All I ever dreamed of was a 265 gallon.

You could probably make some money from wives and girlfriends with this thing. How? PM the husbands and offer to sell it. The wives pay you NOT to, and viola . . . upgrades paid for. My wife would let me settle for a 265 . . . ha ha ha ha ha.

i dont know if you got a chance to see Todds 900 before you left. he has a hammerhead as the return and you could surf in there with the water movement!! it does a great job, i am sure he will be adding a CL or 2 but not sure.

We did see Todds tank before we left. IT was however empty. We are planning on a hammerhead for the return, and have a barracuda for the closed loop that is already drilled, but might switch to a hammer head.

Everything is going to be plumbed down into the basement through the side wall of the house. We are tentatively planning for a wood stand since we wont need under the tank for any equiptment meaning we could build the stand extra sturdy. We'll see how it goes. The concrete is looking pretty expensive, we've been getting some suggestions on just cutting out the crack and repouring that itself. We'll see if we can get someone that knows more about concrete than us over to check it out and get some opinions

good idea!!!!!!!!! =) we could easily get all the money we needed to get this thing going. It's going to be a bit slow going here in the beginning as we just bought the house it is at and it needed a lot of work.

Are you planning on Metal stand or wood stand? What type of protein skimmer are you planning to use? Solar tube is really nice addition. What type of pump or pumps are you planning for the CL? I highly recommend the Tunze Master electronic due to low electricity usage, low - no heat transfer, high head pressure etc...
I also recommend Tunze stream for circulation (6205 or 6305) the new stream design with smaller compact design, come with magnet holder for 1" thickness.... Let me know what pulley system are you planning to use because i plan to do the same :D

A Volcano skimmer will be running this tank. It is in the works now. Dimensions on it should be about 25.5 inch wide tube, total height of the skimmer will be 7ft, and it will hold about 115 gallons. either 2 forcefed dart needle wheels or a hammerhead, but due to how tall it is we'll probably have to go with the darts.

Not sure on the pully system yet. The ceiling out there is 10ft tall. we are thinking on a 4 ft stand, the tank is 3 ft tall so the top of the tank will be 7 ft tall, and the canopy would have 3ft left for the canopy.

Ive read through this thread a couple of times now. This is such a great tank and you guys got a KILLER deal.
If I would have seen the tank for sale there is no doubt I would have bought it. Even if I couldn't do anything with it at the moment.
I'm totally looking forward to the build. :D

its too bad his tank was empty before you left. he must have put water in it right after kyle left. that hammerhead is an animal. it pushes major water. good choice on your part...but i expect nothing less from you two. good luck :)

Wow, this will be an incredible build to watch!

I'll be very interested to see how you deal with the humidity from the tank and lagoon; I can't believe how much I've spent for devices (new A/C, HRV, vent fans, etc) to deal with the humidity.

I dont think humidity is going to be an issue. A humidistat should work as it's a very dry climate out here.

So your plan is to use a vent fan with a humidistat to provide ventilation for your house and have the tank and lagoon depend on the house A/C to keep things cool?

We might do a starboard bottom with glued sand to it for a more natural look.

Sweet tank!
Keep in mind that the bottom will eventually turn purple. There are few threads with pictures of this on RC.

Tagging along for this one!

As long as you're pouring concrete, could you pour the stand too?
thats a good point, could you?

i'm in on this. Good Luck. There is Nothing budget about this tank.

I've been kicking around the idea of pulling the 265 to replace it with a 10' long ... but eventhough i have *most* of the equipment ... it would still cost me several $K to do the plumbing, skin the stand/canopy ... little more of this, and little more of that.

I thought that was a great idea until you mentioned everything will eventually be covered in coraline. Having sand looks nice but I prefer bottomless to avoid sand getting into equipment.

Alright couple questions,
I was planning on replacing the concrete but that would be very expensive and time consuming, many have told me there should be no concern, Here is a picture of the concrete before the tank was unloaded, each pad is 9x9', the tank will straddle two pads. The concrete in the far right is the driveway and is sunk in some, but the carport pad is still completely level and solid???
Do you think this will suffice, pour an additional thickness under the tank, drill footers? etc etc etc etc...
Also as far as a stand I'm still debating wood or steel, I love steel stands and we have one for our cube, great for under tank space, but everything will be plumbed to the basement lagoon so undertank storage is not a concern. It would be much cheaper/easier to build an engineered wood stand, yes the tank will be heavy 10,000+ on a 4x9 area, but that is not overly excessive and I'm not worried a wood stand wouldn't hold it....
Fire away with ideas!!!
